Oh, I forgot-- Yesterday, in the mail, I got a pamphlet that made me laugh. I have no idea how they got my name, but it was actually addressed to me (to me or to current resident). It labels itself as a 'Post Rapture Survival Guide.' There are instructions on the outside, telling me to photocopy it as many times as I can and leave the copies where they will be found by the 'Left Behind' after the Rapture so that they will know what has happened and what they should do next. It also mentions 'Rapture ID cards.' I'm not sure what those are supposed to be for-- Do people leave their clothes and wallets behind when they're taken in the Rapture? If people do, I suppose those cards might tell the Left Behind who a particular pile of clothing belonged to.

The pamphlet was sent out by some folks called Anointed by Grace Designs. They have a website and a blog and profiles on LinkedIn.

I haven't actually opened the pamphlet to look inside. I'm not sure I should. It might make me laugh more or it might not. It might make me sad that there are people so very eager to leave this world behind and so very convinced of their own virtue that they're sure they will be among the elect while all those other, unworthy folks will be abandoned.

But where on earth could they have gotten my name and address that they'd think I'd expect to be taken in the Rapture?

I get really nice polite handwritten invites to the local Jehovah's Witnesses center all the time and considering the short-ish amount of time I've been here and how few things I actually have coming here, I have no idea how/why they picked me. (My name isn't even first on the tax records or anything.) Life's great mysteries?

Well, in my experience, the Jehovah's Witnesses work hard to recruit people and don't assume that the people they're inviting in already share their views. These folks seem to be assuming that I think I'm going to be taken in the Rapture.

It's possible that the pamphlet (I still haven't opened it. I've been distracted) will try to scare me into the proper sort of Christianity, but the outside of it is definitely aimed at believers.

But I can see why you'd wonder how you got on that mailing list.

No clue. Some of the ones who banked with us were pretty chill. I just kinda feel bad they're putting in so much effort (which I admire - as someone not terribly religious, I can admire a certain level of belief and dedication as long as it's not actively annoying/harming anyone) when I'm just going to pitch the letters in the shredder.

Aren't we like three or four Raptures late at this point?

I have been added to the NRA email listserv and I'm scared to try to force myself off it. I do not know how this happened. It worries me sometimes.

It is kind of puzzling sometimes. I mean, at least I know why the AARP keeps bugging me. (I'm disinclined to join the AARP, even once I'm of age to, because they tend to have policies that are fairly hostile to programs for children.)

It is possible that you might be able to unsubscribe without it being a big deal. In my experience, messages sent out that way pretty much always have an unsubscribe option in the small print at the bottom. I think they're required by law to do so. Of course, that doesn't address the fear part of things, and the NRA is not... Well, I can see why you wouldn't assume they'd be reasonable people.

::laughs:: I'm inclined to think that most of those taken in the Rapture won't be missed. Or maybe that the people who are so self-righteously convinced that they're going to be taken will be the only ones left behind.
