Saturday, I made cupcakes. We wanted them for Delia's party on Sunday and for Brownies on Monday. I managed to get batter on my dress. I was rather displeased with myself over that.

Saturday, also, we had a soccer game. It was late in the day for a soccer game. I think it was the last game slot of the day, at 2:30. The game was at Scarlett Middle School which is on the other side of town, the furthest of any of the game fields we're using this season. The girls had enjoyed the game a lot, but I suspect the other team didn't. Our team won, 8-0. I felt sorry for the other team.

Sunday was Delia's party, and pretty much all of the time before the party was given over to getting ready. I frosted cupcakes. Scott prepared bits of crepe paper with rubber washers to be used for playing water, air and fire bending (he had some styrofoam balls for earth bending). Delia had said that she wanted an Avatar: the Last Airbender party, and we did our best.

It was rainy, so all the kids were stuck inside during the party. Usually, we send them outside to run off some energy, but we didn't have that option this time. Scott had them throwing bits of crepe paper and styrofoam at a picture of a generic Fire Nation soldier, and that held them for a while. Then we had them decorate cupcakes. Scott had gotten a lot of little tubes of colored frosting and several different kinds of sprinkles. The drawback to the cupcakes was that Delia only had one candle to blow out. There was no way to stick eight candles into the cupcake, and we didn't dare gather in everyone's cupcakes for fear of not being able to sort them back out again.

After cake and ice cream, Delia opened presents. She got some stuff that she really wanted, so she was pleased. She and the other kids wanted to watch the movie she got, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so, after warning them that the party would end before the movie did, I put it in. Two girls ended up staying late to watch more of the movie. One of them had told her parents that she was staying until six, before the party, even though the invitation said 2-4. They didn't come until she called to tell them it was time. Delia enjoyed having her stay, but I am not best pleased by her. They didn't finish the movie. For some reason, they stopped and wandered away during the big fight with the basilisk. I'd have thought that was the last time to leave, especially for the girl who hadn't seen the movie before.

Monday, I made more cupcakes, this time for Delia's class at school. I also frosted the cupcakes for Brownies. I don't recall doing much else that day. The cupcakes were quite enough.

Tuesday was Delia's actual birthday. Scott had scheduled the day off from work, so he was able to carry the cupcakes (in a large cardboard box that he bought for a couple of dollars at JoAnn's) to school. Once Delia and the cupcakes were safely at school, we ran some errands. I needed to get my fare deal bus pass (the paperwork for my ARide pass is going to take about a month), and I needed to get my hair trimmed. After that, we went to Totoro for lunch. They had some new bentos on the menu, and I tried one. It was okay, but I don't think I'll have that particular one again.

Back at home, I baked a sheet cake so we'd have something to stick candles in. We still had five cupcakes, so I could have skipped the sheet cake, I suppose. Then it was time to retrieve Delia from school.

Tuesdays are Rock Hunters days, so we also retrieved the boy who's on the team. Scott did a demonstration to try to explain specific gravity to the kids. I'm not sure it worked-- They still couldn't explain specific gravity to us after the demonstration. I talked a little bit about what I think will be on the test and about how I've been told it works-- There'll be twelve to twenty stations, each with a rock/mineral specimen. There'll be two questions per station, multiple choice or true/false. The questions will be about identifying the rock, about its characteristics or more generally about geology.

After Rock Hunters, Delia hurried through her homework so that we could go out for dinner. It was too cold and wet for her first choice, Joe's Crab Shack (she only wants to go there if we're going to eat outside so that she can play on the play structure). She chose, instead, to go to Asia City, the Chinese buffet where we went for Mother's Day. I had eaten too much at lunch to really be enthusiastic about a buffet, but Delia was pleased.

Then we went home for cake and presents. I think we overbought presents this year. It was like Christmas for the number of presents. I think Scott kept thinking of more things she'd like and just picked them all up. (I had little input on presents this year. Scott did all the shopping. He says that, next year, he's going to set aside time to take me shopping for Delia's birthday.)

Wednesday, I did my usual three hours in the library. The kids are done with their animal projects, so I didn't have to help with computer use. Instead, I shelved books while the librarian talked about internet safety. At the end, she had all the kids sign a pledge with safety rules. I hope some of it got through to the kids.

Our evening was unexpectedly empty. We'd expected to have Scott's Babylon 5 game, but all but one of the other players canceled. It's a pity. We have a lot of cake, and we'd been counting on the gaming group to eat some of it.

Thursday, we had soccer practice. The field was really extremely muddy due to the rain earlier in the day. I suspect that the kids shouldn't have been playing on it but that nobody from the city inspected the field to say whether or not they could (they will cancel practices if the fields are too wet-- Playing on really muddy fields destroys the turf). One girl slipped and went down on her butt. When she got up, she was covered in mud. Her mother is the one who gives us rides home from practice, and she made her daughter take off her shorts before getting in the car.

Delia had mud spatters all the way up to the middle of her back. I hope the mud comes out in the wash. She also slipped and got part of her shirt really muddy (I used the bag I carry her water bottle and ball in to protect the seat she sat in on the way home. It was awkward, but I think it worked). I don't know how she got her shirt and not her shorts, but she did.
