Oct. 17th, 2015 06:05 pmI really, really want to be asleep right now, but I had some bacon with lunch (almost six hours ago!), and when I tried lying down, that gave me problems. Lovely.
Scott got home a little before 8:00 this morning. My goal was for us to leave by 9:30, so he didn't get a nap and was pretty groggy. He bought bagels on his way home from work, and that's what we all had for breakfast.
On the drive to Kalamazoo (and on the trip home), we listened to an audiobook, Chris Hadfield's An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth. Hadfield read the book himself, and Scott found his voice a little too soothing and so had to turn off the heat in the car pretty much completely in order to stay awake on the trip there.
We went to a restaurant called Food Dance. We were the first ones there. One of my aunts, the one who's a doctor, arrived not long after we did. My brother, who lives five minutes away, was the last to arrive. From the moment we arrived, Cordelia kept demanding to know when we were going to leave.
The food was pretty horribly expensive-- I don't think there was anything on the menu, apart from a few side dishes, under $12. Cordelia was annoyed that we were too late in the day for her to get pancakes, and everything on the menu was a lot fancier than she wanted. Her fallback is generally a BLT, but they didn't offer that. She went for a grilled cheese sandwich, but they wanted to put some fancy pesto and caramelized apples on it. She managed to get them to do it plain, and it was pretty unimpressive-- The cheese was barely noticeable between the slices of bread.
My sister brought a friend, someone she and I both knew in high school, and each of my aunts had one of their children present. The older of those two cousins is twenty years younger than I am, so I don't know either of them well at all. In fact, one of them is the cousin whose name I can never remember. He's one of three boys, and I always stumble when I try to list them.
My mother tried to call me during lunch, and I didn't even hear my phone ring. Cordelia heard it but didn't mention it until after it had stopped ringing. I haven't called my mother back yet because her message said she was just checking in. I'm trying to wake up a bit before I talk to her.
We were trying to time our departure so that we'd be approaching Ann Arbor around 4:00. The football game started at 3:30, and up until that time, traffic heading into town was likely to be terrible. At any rate, when the family gathering broke up, we walked a few blocks and got ice cream. I didn't much want ice cream (I wanted the flourless mousse cake Food Dance was selling), but it was Scott's suggestion as an alternative to spending $10 each on dessert.
I think Scott is napping now. Cordelia is in her room. I can hear her humming, so I assume she's listening to music. I need to start thinking about dinner for Cordelia since she'll be leaving a bit after 7:00 to go to that haunted corn maze thing. I'll do something about dinner and then call my mother.
