Mom arrived around the time I posted yesterday. We sat and talked for a while and then went for lunch. We went to Saica, a nearby Japanese restaurant. Mom had be bim bop (Saica also does Korean food) and was pleased by the level of heat. I got chicken teriyaki and wasn’t entirely pleased. The chicken was fine, but, because I asked for no peppers, I pretty much didn’t get anything but chicken and rice that I could actually eat. There were some tiny strips of, I think, sweet potato that were tempura fried, but the batter to vegetable ratio was such that I could only taste grease. Cordelia had a couple of California rolls, and Scott ordered at cucumber roll to get her to try something else. She liked that, too.

After lunch, we went to the library. Mom hadn’t seen the downtown library in two or three decades, so it was quite different. She was kind of surprised by all of the non-book things the library lends. She told us that she doesn’t dare check out physical books from her local library because, when she returns things, they only get checked in properly about half of the time. The rest of the time, they’re shelved while still checked out to her and, mostly, misshelved. So she only reads ebooks now because it’s very clear when those have been returned.

Then we went for bubble tea. Mom got the half coffee half milk tea stuff (I can’t remember if they call that 'tiki tea' or ’turtle tea').

Mom stayed later than she should have. It was after 4:00 when she left, and she really shouldn’t have been driving after dark because she has (minor according to her) cataracts.

My brother has finally started introducing people to his girlfriend. They’ve been together for at least as long as Cordelia has been alive without any of us meeting her, so I’d actually wondered if she really existed. My mother thinks he was afraid of how we’d react because she is black and twenty years older than he is. My guess is that it’s the twenty years that caused the greater hesitation. But Mom says he’s happy, so I don’t see that we have anything to fuss about. He’s not seventeen or anything— He’s nearly forty.

We had leftovers from New Year’s Eve for dinner last night. I discovered that Gourmet Garden puts egg in their lo mein, too. Unfortunately, I discovered that after I’d put a pile of lo mein in my bowl on top of the small amount of ginger chicken with string beans that we still had left. We managed to get enough of that off again so that I didn’t get sick, but there really wasn’t enough for me to feel full without the lo mein.

We finally got our sheets changed. I’ve been wanting to do that for a while. We didn’t get to dealing with my closet which I regret. Basically, I have a hanging shelf thingy in there, and it fell down in late August or early September at a point when I really wasn’t up to excavating. Basically, what this means is that I only have two long sleeved shirts that I can actually get at. I need to pull all of those clothes out so that I can put the shelf back up and put the clothes back again. I think that, at this point, I might be able to do it on my own, but I’m not sure enough to be willing to undertake it alone.

I have to leave the house three times this week for appointments. The first is this afternoon. I’m trying to decide if I’m going to head downtown early and buy lunch there. Wednesday morning, I’m going in to see my surgeon. Friday afternoon, Cordelia has a dermatology appointment. I really, really try not to do this sort of thing to myself. Leaving the house is really, really hard and exhausting. I’m not sure I can explain that to anyone else unless they also have agoraphobia.

How do you like his girlfriend? I would find it really odd to meet someone that had been in my brother's life for over a decade but never met before.

If you would like a ride or a person to excavate your closet, I'd be happy to help.

Cool about the excavating!

Wednesday someone is supposed to come fix my washing machine. I won't know until tomorrow what time they will come by. So I don't know yet if I can drive on Wednesday. I'll e-mail you once I know about the washing machine repair timing. Would that work?
