Jan. 6th, 2016 11:02 amWe need to get a new coat for Cordelia. I hadn’t realized it until it really got cold. She has basically decided that she’s better off layering sweatshirts than wearing her coat. Today, it was 11 F when she left for school, and she was expecting to be outside for about ten minutes. I really don’t think two sweatshirts and a t-shirt are adequate for that. Some of it is that she thinks she’s warmer with layers than with just her coat and a t-shirt. Some of it, however, is probably that she’s twelve and thinks the sweatshirts are cooler than her grungy old coat.
I went through the Zingerman’s menu yesterday and came up with a long list of things I’d like to try. I’m not sure I will because I could very easily end up spending $30 on just food for me. Maybe I should just get sides and skip the sandwich. If I had a better idea of how big the servings are, it would help.
Somehow, I didn’t get everything done yesterday that I hoped to. Well, mainly, I didn’t bake bread for Scott and Cordelia. I should do that today, but I rather suspect I won’t because of dealing with being tired after my doctor’s appointment. And I did get some things done yesterday. I did three loads of laundry (still to be put away), and I filled and ran the dishwasher.
And one of the two wearable shirts Scott’s parents gave me has a hole in it. It’s tiny and isn’t enough to say that I couldn’t wear the shirt just around the house, but… It’s on the chest and is very, very frustrating. It’s not really a repairable hole, either, not easily anyway. It’s one of those round holes that cotton knit fabrics get after hard use. I ended up giving the long sleeved, button front shirt to the cleaning lady. It’s too big for her, but she thought she knew someone who could use it.
I went through all of my old long sleeved shirts. Most of them are kind of wearable. I can tell they’re too small, though, because they just barely go down to the top of my pants now even though they used to fall lower. I’m not sure about buying replacements. It might be wise, but it’s not like I’m generally going out or having people over. Nobody’s going to see but me and Scott and Cordelia.
I want to get rid of the old Science Olympiad shirt because I’m not going to do the Science Olympiad again (Cordelia’s too old) and because the shirt is a little too small. I was going to donate it to the school for the current team, but according to Cordelia, the shirts they’re using now are different. They’re the same burnt orange color, but the school name on them is different. I don’t know. The color may be more important. I guess I’ll ask.
evalerie gave me a ride to and from my appointment which I really appreciated. They took me in right on time, and I did actually end up seeing the surgeon. I saw one of the nurses first, but she thought he should take a look, too.
The verdict on my breast problems is lymphedema. They’re sending me to physical therapy. The surgeon said that they’ll probably set me up with a compression bra (I’m dubious because I could not find anything of the sort anywhere in my size. I talked to the UMHS affiliated bra people, and they don’t do that sort of thing, just bras for mastectomies. There was that one store in another town that said they might be able to get something but would need 2-4 weeks to do it) and that the therapist will teach me some massage techniques for getting the fluid moving properly.

Date: 2016-01-08 05:12 pm (UTC)We've warned her that she can't go to the local park/nature center for the next two months because the city is having people in to shoot deer there. She says she mostly goes over to her school which is fine, but I worry she'll forget and go to the park.

Date: 2016-01-06 05:21 pm (UTC)It's been a *long* time since I ate much of anything at Zingerman's, so this could be outdated, but my recollection is that:
* the sandwiches are truly huge
* you can order a "half sandwich" of any of them, which is still the same amount of bread but they put half as much filling inside, and charge you a little more than half the price, and it's still a lot of food
* a cheap option is to order a small container of hummus or soup and some bread heels to go with it
A friend of mine said that Lane Bryant is the only place in town that carries bras large enough for her. I don't know if you've checked there, but if you haven't it might be one more place to try.
If you'd like to make an expedition together to the PTO thrift store sometime, or send me with some guidelines for what you're looking for, I'd be happy to do either of those. Or some other store if you would prefer -- I just really like the thrift store, because I always have better luck at finding clothes there that I like, because the selection there is so much wider than at mainstream stores.

Date: 2016-01-06 05:41 pm (UTC)As far as Zingerman's goes, I'm very tempted by a collection of sides. I remember having one of their sandwiches while I was in college and finding it way too big. Of course, a huge sandwich can turn into several meals, and a few of the sandwiches look good.
Lane Bryant does carry compression bras, unfortunately, or didn't the last time I was looking. I'm looking for wire free, front closure bras, and at my size, those are unicorns-- very, very hard to find. I found a lot of places that carried what I needed but not in anything near my size.
I would enjoy a trip to a thrift shop, I think. I don't know when, though. I'm looking for cotton knit shirts, preferably mock turtlenecks but I'll take other types of neck, with long sleeves. 1XL-2XL, preferably in bright colors (but not yellow or orange). Something sort of like this: http://www.blair.com/p/embroidered-crest-mock-turtleneck/27523.uts
I can't wear anything that buttons all the way up. Even a 2XL is sure to gap across the chest.
zing went the strings of my heart
Date: 2016-01-06 06:23 pm (UTC)I know it's because the employees get health care, at least in part, but at those prices I tend to want steak. :-)
On the other hand, we are faithful buyers for Zingerman's rye breads, which are the best we have found in the Midwest, except maybe for Zingerman's old supplier Modern Bakery in metro Detroit. We growse that we can only get the Chernushka rye 4-5 times per year.
For affordable pastrami I tend to go to Amer's on State Street, but that might be more walking than you are up for.
