Apart from being in an strange place, my week has been pretty calm. We're in Florida, in Kissamee (sp?), near Orlando. We're staying at a resort that has lots of little condos. This one has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, three beds and a hide-a-bed couch. There's a fridge and a stove and a dishwasher (which doesn't work dreadfully well). We can even do laundry.

Scott, Delia and Scott's parents have spent four of the last five days at theme parks, Epcot on Monday, Universal Islands of Adventure on Tuesday, SeaWorld on Thursday and the Magic Kingdom on Friday. It rained Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday and today are days for relaxing, resting and preparing for what's to come. Tomorrow, we fly back to Michigan. I think Delia will be really sorry to go.

The big surprise of this trip is that Delia's made a breakthrough swimming. Scott got her a set of goggles that cover her nose, too, and with those, she's been jumping into the pool, going underwater and learning how to swim a little further each day. She still can't go from one side of the pool to the other on her own, but she can almost do it. We just have to be there in case she panics part way across. She has moments when she forgets everything she's learned about keeping herself up in the water. Still, she's made incredible strides in swimming. Scott bought some diving toys, and she's been swimming down to the bottom of the pool to retrieve them. Delia's even dunked herself under without her goggles a few times. Six months ago, she balked at anything like that.

Yesterday, Delia was having so much fun swimming that she didn't want to get out of the pool to go to the Magic Kingdom. We made her, though, and I think she did have fun. She was certainly enthusiastic when they got back at 10:30.

I think Delia's going to have a lot of good memories of this trip. A lot of them will be around the pool, but the parks have made an impression too. I'm just glad that none of her memories will have to do with sunburn. We've been really careful with the sunscreen, and nobody's gotten burned (except Scott on his scalp, and one can't really put sunscreen under hair).

I've been spending my days in the condo with my laptop. I haven't really done anything different from what I'd do in Michigan when alone in the house. I got a little writing done, listened to some music, napped a couple of times, read some Project Gutenberg books, nothing really interesting.

Yesterday, because the others were out during dinner, I walked to a nearby restaurant, a Cracker Barrel. I had a choice of Cracker Barrel, Uno's, Chili's, and Macaroni Grill, all in a strip right next to the resort. I rejected Chili's because the style of food tends to give me heartburn. I rejected Uno's because I didn't feel like pizza. I rejected the Macaroni Grill because I couldn't find out anything about the menu online. Cracker Barrel also had the virtue of being the closest of the restaurants.

The food was okay, nothing spectacular. It was a bit heavy. The rain started while I was eating. After I paid my bill, I hung around on the restaurant's large porch for about fifteen minutes, hoping the rain would let up. It didn't even slacken, so eventually, I gave up and walked through the rain. I got fairly thoroughly soaked before I got back to the resort and the nice covered walkway running alongside the building. It kept raining for at least an hour after I got back, so I'm just as happy I didn't keep waiting.

Delia has more than twice as many stuffed animals as she started off with. She brought three with her and has purchased or won another another six. They won't all fit in her backpack on the way home, so some of them will have to take the long trip in Grammi and Papa's car. She's not happy about that, but I think she's accepted it.

Scott and I are also trying to figure out what we can send with his parents. Our checked bag was a couple of pounds over weight on the trip down, and we don't want that to happen on the trip back. Scott was able to get it into the we-won't-charge-you-extra range by moving his and Delia's water shoes to his carryon bag, but we're not planning to take chances on the trip back. $90 extra for a couple of pounds over is more than we can afford to pay. Next time, assuming there is a next time, we'll know to weigh our bag after we finish packing it.

I've done some work on chapter 20 of Rheotaxis. The words I've added to it are kind of infodumpy, so I'm not sure they'll stay. Well, I need the information there. I'm just hoping to come up with a more graceful way to convey it. I still haven't gotten to the really difficult part of the chapter, either. With luck, I'll manage that some time this week, while Scott's around to keep the girl distracted. Well, if I don't, she'll be back at school pretty soon. I'll have time to myself then.

I also did a little work on part 4 of Torsion. I think it's ready to post now. I'll do that when we're home. I'll also post my Parallels Fic story to my website. I posted parts 1 and 2 of Torsion to AO3 a couple of days ago. The biggest challenge there was coming up with titles for them. They're stories in an arc rather than chapters of a single long story, so I needed titles. Weirdly, Torsion 2 has twice as many hits as Torsion 1. I guess the blurb must be more appealing or something. I just find it strange that people are looking at something labeled 'part 2' without looking at part 1 first.
