Mar. 14th, 2016 10:36 amI’m thinking of lying down for a nap because I didn’t get back to sleep after Scott got up at 5:00. I’m starting to feel very tired now, and I think I may really need some sleep or, if not sleep, rest.
I went with Scott to the library yesterday. I had seven or eight books to pick up, including an interlibrary loan book. Four of those are poetry, and I rather expect to bounce off of those given that I bounce off of most poetry. One of the books I got was a lot longer than I thought it would be. I still want to read it, but I’m revising my estimate of how long it will take me.
It was raining pretty hard, so Scott dropped me off in front of Bubble Island instead of parking half a block away and both of us walking over. I got a pineapple green tea with black bubbles, and I got Cordelia a strawberry green tea with black bubbles. I had to guess on what she’d like because I forgot to ask before we left home and she was in the shower when I tried to call her.
Scott cleared a few portals near the library so that I could capture them. About midway between the library and Bubble Island, I hit the cap on stuff I could acquire. I hadn’t realized I had so very much stuff. Because of that, Scott decided that, on the way home, we’d try to take back a couple of local portals that he’s constantly going back and forth over with a couple of particular people from the other faction. We managed to clear and capture one portal, but the person holding the other one seems to have been doing serious recharging during our attack because nothing we could do would drain the last two resonators. As far as we could tell, we were hitting moderately hard, but those two resonators continued to read as full. Scott says that that particular guy doesn’t normally bother to maintain portals around here once he takes them, so we’re going to wait a couple of days and try again.
Scott suddenly realized, last night, that we have Netflix DVDs to finish, so we watched another episode of Continuum. We have one left on the DVD, and that will finish out season 1. I need to check that season 2 is in our queue. We tried watching this streaming, but I don’t tend to turn on the TV unless I’m prodded, and Scott forgets that there are things he wants to watch unless he has something to remind him (a DVD or something on the DVR, mostly). I have Mirror, Mirror in the DVD player (we have five slots), waiting for me start it up. I’m hoping to get myself to try that today so that I can either finish it and send it back or abandon it and send it back.

Date: 2016-03-14 06:38 pm (UTC)One can only attack, capture, or 'hack' a portal if one's within a certain distance from it. When one captures a portal, one puts protections of various types on it (and when one attacks, one drains the power from and destroys those protections). Hacking a portal just means accessing it to see if one can get stuff from it that one can use for attacking or defending portals. You can hack portals that belong to either faction or that are unclaimed, but only hacking enemy portals gives you experience points.
Yesterday was the first time I ever attacked a portal. Usually, I just hack portals as I ride past them in a cab on the way to or from a doctor's appointment, and I don't stay in range long enough to do anything else. The game is intended as a way for people to motivate themselves to walk around, and portals are often things one can't get at from the street.
There's more to it, but those are the basics as I understand them.

Date: 2016-03-14 10:38 pm (UTC)The 'bubbles' are largish tapioca pearls. They're sort of gooey and sort of chewy, and I really like the texture Bubble Island usually cooks them to. (While Bubble Island was closed due to a burst pipe a couple of years ago, we tried other bubble tea places. One cooked their bubbles insufficiently for my taste so that they were-- not quite crunchy but also not entirely soft. The other place cooked their bubbles until they got so soft that they were starting to dissolve.) I've also seen them called 'pearls' and 'boba.' People seem to either really like them or really not.
