I’m having trouble getting myself spun up today. Scott and I didn’t manage to turn off the light until 1:00. I had kind of a headache when I got up at 5:00 to take my thyroid medicine and ended not getting back to sleep for a while, long enough that I put a pillow over my head to block the light. I think I was a lot more sensitive to the light than I would be normally.

I don’t know if this is pertinent for anyone reading this, but the ACLU has released state specific apps for recording and uploading things going on around you. It’s specifically aimed at police violence incidents, but I suspect it could be useful for other things. I’m pretty unlikely to see anything given that I’m a middle aged white woman, but I downloaded the app anyway because I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I haven’t completely figured out how it works, though. It has a ’test’ setting, so I can play with it and try to figure things out. It also has the option of locking your phone as soon as you end your recording/broadcast. I haven’t activated that because I don’t lock my phone. I probably should, but I don’t.

The rice I made last night came out okay. It was a bit stickier than some people like it, but I don’t mind that. I’m not a fan of particulate, crunchy rice. The rice mixed as well with the pulled pork and green beans as baked potatoes did, so we now have that as an option. Using the pressure cooker for rice takes about as long as cooking rice on the stove top but not as long as using the rice cooker. Most of the time, however, is pressure release, and nobody has to monitor the pressure cooker. I need to figure out how to tell when the pressure has fully released. There must be a way to tell, but I don’t know what it is yet. I assume the instructional booklet will tell me if I look in the right place.

Anyone have particular tips for getting oneself to focus on a story that’s being difficult but that has a hard deadline when other stories are singing siren songs? I need to finish and post the Narnia AU by the 29th of this month, but I keep writing more of other things. I have art for the fic, so I really want to finish it and post and not let my artist down.

Scott suggested that we go to the Saline Celtic Festival today, but Cordelia wasn’t interested. She wants to do something, but none of the offered options appeal to her. Scott asked her if she wants us to pick something and then force her to go. She didn’t actually answer.

For stubborn stories, there are a few things that I sometimes find helpful:

Sit and do something (I knit) and think about scenes from the story that may or may not be actually going into the written version. Play out what would happen if. It can get my brain more excited about the story itself, and things I didn't plan on, often end up going into the story.

Re-read what is written, but not for editing: pretend you're a reader and you're just reading it for fun. Reacting to the good bits can trick my brain into wanting to write more. (I mean, assuming there are good bits. ;-) )

Set a timer and just sit down and write stuff, even if it's crap, just say 'I have to write 500 words even if they end up getting deleted tomorrow.' I write really fast, so this doesn't end up hurting me when I have a deadline.

Make some notes for the siren song stories as a promise to yourself you will get back to them later, and that you'll remember what was so interesting about them.

Good luck, and, er, hi I'm just cruising through my friends' network. :-D
