the_rckThat was not as restful as I’d hoped it would be. My body kind of melted into the mattress, but my mind kept spinning. Also, I’d had about thirty ounces of fluid (water and coffee) while I was up, so I had to get up to pee. The surprise is actually that that was only the once.
At any rate, my brain started out working on the Story I Am Not Writing (at 11000 words and counting) and then went sideways to the Rurouni Kenshin AU that I’ve been stuck on forever. That story is a huge sprawling thing, and I’ve been making progress on one of the storylines while not getting anywhere on another, possibly more important one. My conclusion, naturally, is that I’ve been trying to start the stalled bit in the wrong place and, probably, with the wrong characters. I’ve been trying to start with things happening, things that need to happen but that don’t have an immediate emotional impact, and that’s not where my strength lies as a writer. I need to write Kaoru not Misao, and I need to dig into what she knows, what she guesses, and what she decides to do about it.
Unfortunately, I really can’t afford to start writing that right now. I probably should, in terms of not losing the thread of things and in terms of having inspiration, but I need to finish the WIP Big Bang because it has a deadline.
