Jul. 15th, 2016 05:18 pm470 words so far today. It’s very, very hard to write a character who can’t speak and who isn’t the POV character in a way that gets her thoughts and intentions across, especially when she’s trying hard not to show emotion. Maybe I should have thought more about that, but it makes sense for the villain to take her ability to speak.
Scott is working until 7 tonight. I haven’t heard from him all day, so I’m not sure how he’s doing at this point.
His parents want us all to come up for the afternoon on Sunday to celebrate Scott’s sister’s husband’s birthday. At this point, I don’t know if we’ll be able to because of Scott maybe having to work. I really don’t particularly want to go because it will mean me sitting at Scott’s parents’ place for several hours while everyone else goes boating and swimming. Their wifi signal is good enough for me to get email but not good enough for me to read LJ/DW unless I haul everything to the basement.
Cordelia just decided she was bored enough to go to the bookstore after all. She even took money in case she sees something she wants. I think it helps that it’s only 75F and overcast. Maybe I’ll go for a walk after she gets back. Scott’s not going to be up to it tonight, so there’s no point in waiting for him.

Date: 2016-07-16 10:00 pm (UTC)I'll probably end up taking my laptop and writing. I can write just fine without internet, and I do have that looming deadline, after all.

Date: 2016-07-17 07:39 am (UTC)I saw your post on my foaf page on lj. I have a brain disorder that makes it impossible for me to speak - if it would help you to ask questions from someone who basically lives like that, I'm happy to answer them as best i can.

Date: 2016-07-18 07:27 pm (UTC)The current scene is difficult because Susan's motivations and decisions are pivotal, but I'm nailed down in a different point of view, and Susan doesn't want the point of view character to know what she's thinking. I've spent six thousand words in this point of view, and the story isn't likely to run more than eight or nine thousand words. I'm not sure I can change the point of view at this point without needing to go back and alter what I've got so far. My posting deadline is the 29th, so I really don't want to change anything I don't have to.
I'm writing The Chronicles of Narnia. Do you know those books? This is a dark AU of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in which Aslan never shows up and Jadis (the villain) captures the four children.
At any rate, Susan finding ways to communicate would be pretty important as she tries to protect and encourage and share information with her younger siblings. She's twelve or thirteen. They're somewhere between eight and ten. There's an older sibling, too, but he's going to be offstage most of the time.
All of them can read and write, but I'm not certain that they'll have access to any means of doing that. There are mentions of books and of written communication in canon, but they don't entirely make sense in context. I'm not sure if paper would generally be available, and there definitely wouldn't be anything higher tech. There is magic, but I'm not yet sure what it can do and which characters will be able to do what with it. Susan's inability to talk is a new thing, so they don't have established family strategies for it yet.
I'm inching through this part of the story because it's from Jadis's point of view and she's... I'm not sure being in her head for long periods is healthy. I was originally planning to stick with her point of view for the entire arc, but I want the children to defeat her eventually, though, and I don't think that will work from her point of view.

Date: 2016-07-19 01:45 am (UTC)While they don't have established strategies _yet_ surely they would have some kind of shorthand for when they're around adults and need to communicate, things like 'this is boring' etc., that could be repurposed. Writing is hard because it takes time, but like, for me, if I tilt my head to the left everyone who knows me knows it's my 'are you kidding? of course I'm fine', but someone who doesn't know me just thinks I'm trying to see something better or thinking. There are a lof of subtle body language things that I just exaggerate, as well, and I can draw attention to them by knocking on something so the person is looking at me. If they're not tied up or separated, touch is useful too - tracing letters on someone's palm, squeezing their hand or shoulder (they might even have done this as a game). A lot of people around me also just guess until I say yes or no, which can be massively frustrating.
