Dec. 3rd, 2011 04:44 pmDelia's basketball team won their game today. They rather overwhelmed the other team. Some parents in the bleachers told us that the other team was mostly second graders. Delia's team is mostly third graders, mostly girls who played last year and so have experience. We offered the other parents sympathy. We remember how it was last year when our team was mostly second graders, mostly girls who had no idea what was going on.
Delia says she wants to play indoor soccer. I don't know whether or not anybody she knows will be playing, but I'm going to see about signing her up so that she has an activity going on during January and February (I'm not sure if it runs into March or not. It may). We've missed the deadline for online registration, so I'll have to send it through the mail. I hope we can still get her in. Crossed fingers.
Delia's school had a special assembly on Wednesday. They brought in some people doing yo-yo tricks. Having seen that, Delia wanted a yo-yo. She used her own money to buy one of the ones for sale from the folks who did the show. We kicked in some money to buy extra strings and a how to DVD. She's still learning and is banging the yo-yo into the floor a lot. I hope it's sturdy. Scott actually has some skill with a yo-yo. I never mastered even the basics.
I've made no further progress on my Yuletide fic. I don't know what happens next. I think I'm juggling too many characters in this scene. I need to focus things down and get some of those characters out of there. I can do this. Really. It's not time to panic yet.
I have five library books to read that are due before the Yuletide deadline. Four of them, I can renew and will. The remaining one, I need to buckle down and read. It's going to be a challenge-- It's called The Curse of the Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls with Courage and Confidence. I have a lot of trouble getting through books like that under the best of circumstances, and this definitely won't be. I think it's important, however. Trying to understand the challenges that Delia will be facing (is facing) matters. If I understand, maybe I can come up with strategies to help her. Middle school and high school are on the horizon. I remember how awful those years were, and I didn't care as strongly as I suspect Delia will. She already cares a lot about what the kids around her think and expect.
