Hm. I have one fandom that I’m pretty certain I want to nominate for Yuletide. There don’t seem to be any fics for it on AO3 at all. Unfortunately, my memory of the canon is at that point where I remember the characters but can’t recall their names at all. That means I need to go into the basement and find the books so that I can pull out the character names I want.
I’m not sure about the other two fandoms to nominate yet because I have a list of eighteen (down from twenty six) possibilities, none of which I’m more invested in than the others. Most of them also have zero fics on AO3. Five of them have fic, including fic written for me, and one has fic, including the story I was interested in asking for when I nominated the fandom last year. I suppose I could eliminate all six of those and be down to twelve possibilities.
Including the one I’m pretty sure I’m nominating, I’m looking at:
Webmage series - Kelly McCullough (zero fics)
Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman (two fics, but one’s a crossover about 150 words long)
The Silver Crown - Robert C. O’Brien (zero fics)
Wild Hunt Series - Jocelin Foxe (one fic)
Ukiah Oregon series - Wen Spencer (one fic)
Bureau 13 series - Nick Pollatta (zero fics for the book series, but I didn’t check for fics based on the game)
Athanor series - Jane Lindskold (one fic)
Alfreda books - Katharine Eliska Kimbriel (I think this series has a different name, canonically. I’ll look it up if I pick it. I searched for it on AO3 using the author’s family name.) (zero fics)
Nuala books - Katharine Eliska Kimbriel (zero fics)
Morrow series - H. M. Hoover (zero fics)
The Princes of Earth - Michael Kurland (zero fics)
Drujienna’s Harp - Ellen Kindt McKenzie (zero fics)
Twilight Zone - Golden Earring (the song itself rather than so much the video) (zero fics)
List of things I was considering but that have gotten fic before:
Shamanic Princess (one fic for me)
Planet Ladder (zero fics on AO3, but I know I got two short treats in this fandom for Yuletide one year. I wonder what happened to them? Did I imagine them?)
Justice League: Gods and Monsters
Alcatraz series - Brandon Sanderson (two fics, including one for me)
The Witch Family - Eleanor Estes (one fic for me)
Sector General - James White (nine fics, including one for me)
Of course, what I ought to be doing is finding a beta reader for my Amber fic and figuring out what, if anything, I'm going to run at UCon. For the former, I have one place left to look, but going into Yuletide chat and saying, "I need a beta reader for a Chronicles of Amber darkfic that includes explicit non-con and is 32000 words long and is supposed to be posted on Sunday." For the latter, my brain keeps yammering about Amber fic ideas that can't readily be turned into game scenarios.

I would offer to beta your Amber fic, but I'm much more familiar with the first five books, and you seem to be fonder of the second batch.

Date: 2016-09-15 04:59 pm (UTC)I think that what it is for me about the second set of Amber books is that I don't actually believe most of what's in them. That makes me want to poke them with a stick until something real falls out. Does that make sense?
I saw Zelazny speak at a local convention, and he said that he'd written the Merlin books because he could sell them rather than because he had any interest in them. I got the impression that he sort of resented the series. He didn't come out and say that, but it was the definite impression I got, especially given how excited he was when I asked him to autograph Doorways in the Sand. He actually said something on the order of, "Wow, it's not Amber!"
The Corwin books actually make sense in terms of Corwin being more or less the person he presents himself as. Corwin also deliberately sets out to do things. He fails sometimes, but he's not just wandering through the story going, "Hey, look at that!" while other people plot and scheme around him.
I think that I'm less likely to write fic for things things satisfy me.
My current story uses the canon for the second series up to the end of the first book (which has Merlin in a situation that he only gets out of because Jasra's carrying the idiot ball), and I'm looking at who Merlin would likely be if he actually were a part of the family that Corwin talked about. None of them are actually nice people, and things Merlin says about his mother's family and life in the Courts of Chaos implies a lot of stuff that shouldn't produce someone who really acts the way Merlin does.
I think that the second series canon that matters is knowing who Ghostwheel, Luke, and Jasra are. Mandor turns up briefly, but I don't think that needs canonical context. The main reason I want someone who knows canon is how much of what's going on rests on Oberon and Corwin and Brand. I also bring in Martin in chapter six, and understanding that kind of depends on being aware of his interactions with Oberon, Dara, and Merlin in the first series. (His interaction with Brand is critical, too, of course, but that's easier for a reader to pick up from context.)
