Sep. 17th, 2002 10:57 amMost of the business of the last week has been me continuing to write. I've now got a bit more than 25,000 words on this Weiss Kreuz fic. And I have no end in sight. I've got some ideas for the plot, but so far the thing's been rather more organic. I write the scene that my instincts tell me comes next, and, often, it develops in directions I hadn't anticipated. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it if I ever finish it (and I hesitate to jinx myself by promising that I will), but it's flowing. Scott commented that it's rather amazing how much more I get done when I'm writing something that wants to be written.
I'd been hoping to post the Weiss thing on fanfiction.net eventually, but it's definitely an NC-17 story, and fanfiction.net is pulling all of those. They've been getting a lot of complaints recently about the fact that such stories were accessible by minors (They do have a little popup query that asks would be readers of such stories to confirm that they're over 18, but...). My suspicion is that a big part of the problem was the proliferation of NC-17 stories in fandoms that are wildly popular with children. Harry Potter leaps immediately to mind (and I've been rather creeped out by the idea of Harry Potter slash...), and I'm sure there are others.
There's been quite an outcry on the subject. I've gotten at least one message about a petition asking the site administrators to reconsider. I didn't sign it because I don't really see how they can. The site's become big enough to be a real target, and there's no money to defend the site or the administrators if someone takes legal action. A real gating system would be a lot of work and probably cost money, processing time and a lot of other headaches.
Some authors seem to be reclassifying their stories to an R rating simply in order to keep them at fanfiction.net. I'm a little dubious about that tactic, but I suppose I can understand the frustration. The site has the advantage of being widely accessed. If you post there, someone will certainly read your story (and at a site like that, readers are more likely to continue to follow stories that only kind of interest them because they don't have to work hard to do it). Also, those who write in more than one fandom can have all of their stories in one easy to find place. For readers, it's easier to check one site for updates than a dozen (or more).

I do have two original stories that can be found on my web page at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~acm/Homepage.html You'll find the links in the 4th paragraph.
