Last weekend was my sister-in-law's birthday (also my brother's birthday, but he's out of state, so it wasn't occasion for any sort of family get together). My mother-in-law put together a nice dinner for it, and we contributed a loaf of bread (sweet potato-rosemary, very nice). Our niece is right on the verge of walking (actually, I bet she's doing it by now). She's able to stand on her own without leaning on furniture and keeps almost taking that step.

We took advantage of the visit to test drive Scott's mother's car. It's a Subaru Outback wagon, and everything Scott had read suggested that it would be a good pick for our next car. He wanted to see how it handled and whether or not I liked the seats. Scott's main complaint was that the thing's not built for people as tall as he is, but he admits that he's going to have that problem with any vehicle we look at. I found it a bit more of a step up than I'm used getting in but nothing I can't deal with.

We took our VHS copy of The Muppet Movie and gave it to our nephew. We've got a copy on DVD now, so we didn't need the VHS any more. My sister-in-law is hopeful that he'll like it since he thinks Kermit's wonderful in general, and she said that she and her husband will appreciate having a movie they haven't seen dozens of times already. Of course, when we put it in that evening, I think that we adults were more interested than our nephew was. He was a little too busy bouncing off the walls and demanding to know when we were going to give him cake.

I did talk to my brother for quite a while on his birthday. He was in the middle of watching a football game (the team he favored was losing if I recall correctly) and mentioned that he was thinking about playing some golf later that day. He says that he likes golf if it's leisurely, that he deliberately avoids "good" golf courses because he doesn't want to deal with players who take it seriously. I suppose I can respect that. I don't understand the appeal personally, but... I know lots of other people who do.

He's apparently enjoying his classes. He's thinking about majoring in sociology right now because he's enjoying the class he's taking on rural America. I don't know if that will hold, but I suppose he's got time. We also talked a bit about our parents and the difficulties we've both had in dealing with them. His irritation centers around his teenage years, not too surprisingly. That was when he started smoking. When they found out, our parents freaked. I think they handled it badly (Note that I'm not saying that they should have been happy about it) because even now he's certain that they were more upset about the principle of the thing than they were about anything else.

I think I'll have to call him more often. We're reaching the point where we have things to talk about again. I think he's now fairly sure of who he is and that I'm not trying to make him be anybody else.
