I'm currently rewatching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I've gotten very little actually accomplished today, and watching a movie is in a way an excuse not to try anything else for a while. My brain just hasn't been up to anything requiring thought.

I spent the weekend working on the rewrite of the second section of my Weiss fanfic. Leah has agreed to beta read it, although she stipulated that I shouldn't expect too much since she's never done it before. I'm just happy to have found somebody willing to do it now; the person I've been dealing with online has hit a patch of real life and so can't predict when she'll be able to get back to me. I'm still hopeful that she'll get back to me eventually, but I can't predict when her schedule will open up.

I seem to be one of those writers who needs to expand in writing my second draft. Everything I rewrite gets longer. Given that the folks who read and comment on my stuff generally specify that I need to clarify and to expand on certain points, I don't think this is altogether a bad thing. It's just strange because I've talked to many other writers who consider the rewrite to be the time for trimming the text. I suppose it really depends on style. I tend to abbreviate things or omit them because I know what's going on well enough not to need the explanation. When I've got layers of motivations and lies and the like, that clarification becomes pretty important.

At any rate, the twelve pages I started with grew to sixteen. This means I've completed two drafts of the first scene. LunarGeography reread it from beginning to end after I'd finished the rewrite, and she agrees that that section can stand more or less on it's own, assuming I'm going for PWP (which I'm not). Still, I found a website doing a contest for which a PWP is quite appropriate, and I think I'll try sending this in there. The deadline's December 1st, which is why I'm actually in a hurry to find a second beta reader with time right now.

I spent a bit of time yesterday trying to come up with a title I can use for the story. I haven't been able to come up with anything I like. Naming stories (or poems) is always one of the hardest things for me. I tend to feel that the title's not very important and so don't pay attention to it until I have to. Then I have to try to find a handful of words that sum up the theme of my story in a way that will catch the reader's eye. I have no idea what I'll call this one. I've started with a list of words that I think reflect some of what's going on; now I just have to figure out where I've shelved my thesaurus and see if that suggests anything.
