the_rckFriday evening, my stepfather called. He waxed enthusiastic about the prospect of my having a child and basically did everything he could to apologize for his previous lecture short of actually apologizing. I expect that this means that Mom's finally won the fight with him about what he does and doesn't have the right to say to me.
Mom wanted to know if I forgave my stepfather, and I do mostly. I wish he was able to apologize directly (and that he'd never done it to begin with). What he said would have been hurtful coming from a stranger. From a man I view as a father figure... Telling me that he expected that I'd be a neglectful or abusive mother was not, I think, something that he had a right to do, at least, not in the way he did.
After I assured Mom that I would in fact start speaking to my stepfather again and that Scott was unlikely to assault him when next they meet, she started talking about her new passion. She's taken up genealogy and has been tracing her family and my stepfather's as far as she can. She's also found an old family movie, a 9mm thing, made when she was three, more than fifty years ago. She's transferred it to video and is going to distribute it through the family. I'm looking forward to seeing it because I never had the chance to meet the great-grandparents who are in it and because I think it will be fascinating to see my grandmother as she was in her twenties.

Her carpal tunnel problems keep her from doing renovations on their house or restoring old light fixtures, and she's not currently working except very occasionally when people she knows need her particular legal expertise. I don't think she's entirely happy where they are now either. It's very hard to tell, however. At least now she has a passion that she's willing to talk about with me.
