Wednesday, I finally tried out the bus route to Kroger. My goal wasn't to visit Kroger (although I did do so). I needed to pick up a birthday present for our niece's first birthday. Her mother wanted one of those soft fuzzy animal puppets, and Scott thought that The White Rabbit, a store in the same strip as Kroger, carried them. As it turned out, he was right. I got a leopard puppet. There weren't as many choices as I'd hoped because most of what they had was larger than the child herself. I discarded the shark and the spider immediately, and the flamingo wasn't any fun. That left me with the leopard and the meerkat, and I settled on the leopard because it felt nicer.

After that I went to Kroger and picked up a few things that we needed and a few things we didn't. I realized after the fact that wandering through a grocery store alone is not good for me from the point of view of avoiding impulse buying. I got a pomegranate, some caramel for the pie Scott planned to make and some cookies.

After Kroger, I went to the yarn shop. I was looking for a size K crochet hook since the yarn I'm currently working with needs one (I'm making a full sized afghan for our couch). Sadly, that was the only size they didn't have. I picked up a few that I didn't have and got some remaindered yarn to play with. I want to try some granny squares just to see if I can manage to keep proper count.

At that point, I was starving. Out of a desire for warm food (and a publicly accessible restroom), I went to the McDonald's nearby. That proved a bad decision. I've never had good service there, and this time was no exception. They got my order wrong and then tried to give me more food to make up for it. Why on earth would I want another order of fries? I had no room for them and ended up throwing them out. They had no napkins available in any of the dispensers, and their condiment counter only had ketchup, no salt or pepper. The place seemed to be staffed mostly by women between 30 and 60, and they seemed even more indifferent than the teenagers one usually encounters at fast food places.

Getting home, I had two options. I could take the bus I'd come out on, but that would require crossing a busy street. Also, that bus only runs every half hour. The other bus didn't require crossing any busy streets but did require climbing up a moderately steep hill. I decided to go with that one because it runs every 15 minutes. I regretted the decision when I climbed the hill because I always forget how the cold air affects my breathing and have to relearn it every year. It was very slow going.

Sadly, I seem to have strained my back with that trip. My very low back hurts a lot. I can't bend over, and standing up from sitting down takes about twice as long as I think it should. If I still feel like this on Monday, I'm going to the doctor. I don't know that they'll be able to do anything. I'm already doing ice and heat and a little stretching, and I can't take any medications that might actually be helpful due to the pregnancy. Tylenol's safe enough but totally useless, so I don't see any point in risking the long term liver toxicity. I take it for colds but not for much else.
