On Tuesday, I had the big deal ultrasound to check on the fetus' development. Scott called in sick so that he could come along, and I'm really glad that he did. The procedure seemed to take forever, but there was a sort of amazing fascination in seeing the baby that's growing inside of me. They tell us it's a girl, and I now have rather more faith in their ability to make that determination. If they can identify her kidneys, her stomach, etc., I'm willing to accept that they can identify genitalia. I ended up with a bit of a sore abdomen from the whole thing since the technician (and later the doctor) tried very hard to get a good angle to see everything which meant pressing the device firmly against my belly and moving it around a lot.

The little one was sadly uncooperative for a couple of things. She moved around quite a bit but never to the orientation the technician hoped for to get those final couple of measurements. Still, everything looked fine, according to what they told us. (There was a brief moment's panic for us when the technician jostled the control panel and then said, "I've never seen that before!" to the resulting glitch, a horizontal black line across the entire screen.)

We spent the evening calling relatives to let them know. My mother surprised me by saying that she'll be buying girl baby clothes. Then she explained to me that, when I was an infant, several people became angry with her after they misidentified me as a boy. A later conversation with my father clarified this a little-- Apparently, my paternal grandmother gave them a lot of blue clothing for me (My father thinks she bought it before I was born) which they then used. He remembered some of the same incidents that she'd mentioned.

I managed to reach my sister, Laura, which was something of a triumph as I'd been playing phone tag with her since Christmas. She's quit her job due to low wages and problems with her supervisor (the man who bought the place from her a few months ago). Her fiancé has ordered her to take two weeks "vacation" before she starts looking for other work, and, since they can afford it, she's doing just that. My biggest regret for her old job is that it was always the best place to reach her on the phone or to which to ship things. Ah, well, I'm sure she'll get around to sharing her home address with us eventually.

I didn't manage to get a firm date from her for her wedding. Our cordless phone needs a new battery since the current one won't hold much of a charge anymore, and it chose to give out on me while I was talking to Laura. My brother said that he thinks they're leaning toward March 15th. I hope he's right because that's a date I'm much more likely to be able to manage than anything in April. My obstetrician says there's no reason I shouldn't travel except that the airlines may not want to take me and that my insurance may not pay for anything that happens outside its service area. The doctor thought that most airlines would take me up to 36 weeks, but I'll have to talk to them to be sure.

I did discover why my father never received the Christmas present I ordered him from Swiss Colony. I'd been wondering because he kept saying it hadn't arrived, and I've never had that trouble with them before. Basically, he never gave me his new address when he and his girlfriend moved. I'd gotten their phone number from my grandmother without realizing that I still had the old address. They're in a completely different town now. I suggested that next time he should actually call or e-mail me with the new address.
