Jan. 16th, 2003 04:39 pmWe had our usual New Year's Eve dinner this year. In attendance, we had Ogham, Mary and David, LunarGeography and her husband, and Rain. Scott and I prepared a turkey with stuffing, and everybody else brought a dish to share. There was, not too surprisingly, more food than we could manage to eat. As per usual, the turkey was still pretty frozen when I was preparing to stuff it. I was rather annoyed because we'd put it in the refrigerator to thaw several days in advance. Scott blamed our deep freeze, but I pointed out that ice crystals on our carrots probably meant that the problem was with the setting for the fridge.
Fortunately, I've become quite practiced at getting turkeys to thaw enough to let go of the neck and giblets, and we always use a meat thermometer. So far, starting with a frozen bird rather than a thawed one hasn't really thrown off my cooking estimates. Every year, we end up with a turkey cooked well enough to start disintegrating as Scott carves it; the meat's literally falling off the bone.
After dinner, we spent a reasonably laid back evening. Scott's sister gave us the Buffy board game for Christmas, and Scott got several people to try it. I did tarot readings for Ogham and LunarGeography. We all drank a little sparkling juice at midnight and exchanged wishes that 2003 treat us all better than 2002 did.
