Jan. 28th, 2003 01:24 pmMonday was one of those wandering days when I get nothing much done. I watched some anime that I'd taped over the last couple of weeks, the first eight episodes of Lupin III from the Cartoon Network and the last episode of Crest of the Stars from TechTV. The Lupin stuff was pretty funny, but I'm rather puzzled by the fact that they didn't air one particular episode (which I have also heard will be omitted from the DVDs). Judging by the preview, there was some sort Nazi conspiracy in it, and I suppose it was probably in bad taste since almost all the episodes are. Still...
I remain unimpressed by Crest of the Stars. The final episode did manage to resolve the plot for the characters, but it felt very rushed. I'll most likely keep the episodes; there are only 13, after all, and it's not like I need the tape for something else right now. Mostly, it's that I don't know anyone else who's got the series. This way, I can lend it to anyone who's still interested.
I also finally got a response from the woman online who'd volunteered to beta read my fic. She didn't enjoy part 3 much at all, finding it humorless and grim. I don't think it's entirely humorless, but it definitely is grim. This section hits about the lowest point in the interaction between the two characters I'm focusing on. I want hints that things could improve and thought I'd put them there, but this reader didn't see them, so I'll have to go over it all again and see where I can change focus and slant in order to emphasize what I want noticed.

. I thought the political set-up, characters, and technology were wonderful. Everyone tells me it goes downhill from there, however. Oh well...I'd insist on barrowing the tapes, but I don't think I like the dubbing on tech TV. I am usually ambivilent towards such things, but the brief bits of an episode I caught made me cringe somehow.

Date: 2003-01-29 07:04 am (UTC)In about the last half of the series, the social and political stuff kind of disappears as the two main characters are chased all over the place by a variety of bad guys.
There is a sequel series, Banner of the Stars, set three years later, after Jinto's finished his schooling and Lafiel's reached the point of commanding a ship of her own. I know very little about it, though, apart from that. I just happened to see it on the shelf at Wizzywig.
