Jan. 30th, 2003 11:39 amI've decided, after considering the response from one of my beta readers, that I won't post part 3 of the fic until I'm ready to post part 4 as well. I suspect from some of the other things the woman said that she's going through a very rough patch currently and so might have been inclined to take the darkest possible view of what she read, but the section is grim, very grim. I want it to be. Softening it would undermine some of what I plan to do later on. Part 4 gives a bit of a view of events in part 3 from a different angle and, I think, offers a few hints as to ways in which the situation could get better.
Rewriting part 4's going to take a while, though. I need to insert some visual description which is sadly one of the writing skills I lack. I also need to tweak a lot of phrasings that don't quite say what I want. I suspect that the section will end up considerably longer when I'm done (one reason I'm not going to combine parts 3 and 4. I'd get another monster as long as part 1 was). I switch points of view frequently during this bit of the story, and I'm kind of inclined to want to change that, but... It's absolutely essential to transmit character attitudes, beliefs, internal monologues and so on here. I'm not sure the story can go on properly without my giving the reader a peek inside the characters' heads.
My DVD order arrived last night, and I immediately watched the DVD with the scenes I need to finish part 8. There wasn't as much to them as I'd hoped, but at least I'll have the details right. I think I'll work on that scene whenever I get frustrated with rewriting part 4.
