Well, it looks like I'm going to have to ditch the Earthlink address and find something else to use for the website and mailing lists. The number of bounced messages hasn't decreased, and I shudder to think about the ones that must actually be getting delivered. So far, Norton AntiVirus hasn't detected anything nasty lurking in the attachments, and I've done a complete check to make sure it's not anything on my hard drive (which I was almost certain it wasn't given that only one person in my address book has gotten one of these messages and none of the mailing lists I'm on have gotten any. I've only got a dozen addresses in there, after all). Earthlink hasn't gotten back to us about our complaint. I suppose I could change my password again, but I don't think it would help at all.

This whole thing really annoys me. Making the change will be a serious pain, and I'd really rather not do it. I'll have to resign from all my mailing lists, notify everybody I can think of who might try to reach me at the old address, and change the website. And even with all of that, there's no guarantee that whoever's doing this won't simply follow along with the change. I suppose it depends on how targeted the whole thing was.

As to targeting, I'm seeing signs both ways. Several of the bounces have come to me because whoever did the sending didn't remove the anti-spam bits of the addresses, which, to me at least, argues for something being done without active oversight. On the other hand, two bounces have come from a mailing list run by a woman whose fansite I've linked to from my site (They're bouncing because I'm not a member of the list). Also, some of the message subjects and labels on attachments (but by no means all) have references that make sense with the fandom in question. Also, apart from one message sent to me, LunarGeography, whose e-mail address also appears on the site, has not been hit by this.

Sigh... All I can do is shrug and make the effort. I'm probably going to drag my feet on it a little in hopes that something will clear the whole thing up, that whoever's doing it will get bored or that I'll think of a better solution than changing addresses.
