May. 5th, 2012 08:35 pmWriting is going slowly. I just had to chop an entire scene. It didn't fit at all. I may be able to salvage some of the dialogue, but it may all simply go. I've also done some minimal research (Wikipedia) on castles and their staff (and I think the 'castle' in The Ordinary Princess is more properly a palace. It's not fortified, and it has attached and extensive gardens), but I'm hoping I can sidestep the issue. The book's set in an idealized fantasy realm, so I can fudge quite a bit, but I keep running into niggly details that I simply don't know. Those details were quite unimportant to the book, so there's nothing there to go on. I'm not sure how much I can just make up.
To make matters worse, I've caught a cold. Scott's got it, too. We came down with it within hours of each other, so we must have caught it in the same place. Delia's showing no symptoms and hasn't, so it isn't something she brought home. The whole thing is making focusing difficult. I'm going to try to write a hundred words tonight and a hundred words tomorrow. If I can keep it up, I can finish this thing.
Scott will be working tomorrow. He wasn't supposed to, but they called up and asked. He's hoping this will make getting the next two weekends easier. He'd like to have Mother's Day off and needs the 20th because that's Delia's birthday party. We're having it at the Hands On Museum, and I can't do it without help. I might be able to talk Scott's sister into coming down early to transport, me, Delia and the cake and ice cream, but I'm hoping not to have to try. We have an offer of transportation home, if it comes to that. It's getting there that would be a challenge.
Today's soccer game was pleasant up until the end. Only seven girls from Delia's team were present, so everybody played the whole game with no breaks. The score was tied at zero all at the end. The ref decided to have the teams break the tie by kicking balls at the goal with only the goalie to save. We've never seen that at a Rec & Ed game before. They don't keep score. They don't record wins and losses. Delia attempted to be goalie for this face off (no one else on her team was willing to try). She missed both balls and was in tears. It wrecked the experience of the game for her. She'd played goalie in the first half of the game and stopped several goals.
Delia's become more cheerful since the end of the game. We took her out to dinner (in part because Scott and I felt too sick to fix dinner but also in part to make the day feel more special in a happy way). We went to Be Won, a Korean restaurant on our side of town. Delia had be bim bop. She didn't like the egg, but she ate part of the rest of it and willingly packed up the leftovers to take home. I suppose we'll see if she eats them.

Date: 2012-05-06 04:29 pm (UTC)I'm grappling with the fact that this is something of a fantasy utopia. There don't seem to be any wars or political machinations. I'm trying to stay in keeping with the canon which is a short, sweet romance.
