I'm hitting a bit of writer's block on my fic. I suspect that it's largely because I'm feeling so generally crappy that being creative's hard. At the moment, I'm tempted simply to skip forward and write some of the scenes that are clear in my head. I know, for example, exactly how I want the last couple of scenes to go; I'm just not sure what I need to write to get there. I've got ideas, but I expect that only some of them will end up working.

The scene I've been working on has gotten hung up on small issues. Things like what movie the characters would watch and what they'd eat while doing it... Pretty much trivia. I've taken a suggestion for my husband as to the movie, and I think I can make it work. None of the movies that I thought of or that anybody suggested stood out as exactly what I wanted. I wanted something that qualified as a "guy movie" without heading into any serious violent action, basically a comedy. LunarGeography suggested using one of Jackie Chan's films, but I felt the level of violence wouldn't work. Her next suggestion, Grosse Point Blank, was both better and worse. The reason I want to stay away from the violence is that I think the characters are looking for something that won't make them think about their real lives. For assassins, I expect Grosse Point Blank might cut a little too close even though it is funny.

My difficulty is that I don't watch many movies to begin with and especially don't watch most comedies that I would consider "guy movies." I tend to be very picky about my humor, and I don't like any humor that requires characters getting hurt or horribly embarrassed. I have trouble even watching commercials for such things.

Scott's suggestion was The Blues Brothers. My biggest problem with that is its age. I could easily see it in the collection of possibilities since I see Nagi having bought a lot of stuff simply because he could rather than because those were movies he wanted to watch. (I've decided his taste in books, but it doesn't translate that well to movies. I thought he'd enjoy nonfiction that was as far away from the reality of his life as possible, stuff about people doing things he'll never get to do. I have him reading Kon Tiki at one point, and I think that books written by people who've done animal field studies might appeal, possibly histories as well. No Clancy or Ludlum type stuff and no science fiction or fantasy, that's all too close to his day job.)

If I recall correctly, the violence in the film consists largely of wrecked cars (and here's an advantage-- I have actually seen this movie. It's been many, many years, but I've seen it). If I wanted to be really goofy, I could say that Yohji saw it at an early age and was inspired to think sunglasses were cool. Somehow that last doesn't exactly work for me, but... He is going to have to be the one to select the title, whatever it ends up being. He has to pick something that won't increase his stress levels because he knows he's right on the edge of disintegration.

Of course, using The Blues Brothers brings up the dubbed/subbed question. I somehow suspect that the music would lose quite a bit if dubbed into Japanese, and I rather shudder to think of some poor Japanese voice actor trying to dub the lyrics anyway. How well would the basic story translate? Hm. More thought required.

I understand blues music is pretty popular in Japan, so that might work.

You're right, there's little violence in the movie aside from vehicular mayhem. I think Ray Charles shoots a wall at one point, but I'm not sure. There are lots of guns in the movie but very little shooting.
