May. 7th, 2003 11:47 amLast Wednesday, Laura and Drew came by briefly to retrieve the DVDs they'd lent me and to drop off some more. I'm profoundly grateful since it gives me something to do that doesn't require a lot of effort. The first batch they lent me included The Castle of Cagliostro, which I'd seen before dubbed and was glad to see subbed, and the first DVD of Sailor Moon S. Laura wanted to see what I thought of Sailor Moon before lending it to me since she regularly rewatches them with her niece.
The rest of the first batch consisted of Sorcerer Hunters and the Magic Users Club OAVs. I liked the Magic Users Club quite a bit-- It required little thought and was fairly funny. Sorcerer Hunters worked a little less well for me. Part of the problem was that for some reason the voices kept lulling me toward sleep, and part of it was less tangible. I didn't think that the series plot was well integrated into the episodes. I didn't dislike the series. It made me laugh, and I made Scott watch a couple of episodes so he could understand my amusement at Tira and Chocolate's combat attire. There just was something I was looking for that wasn't really there.
Now, I'm working on the first season of Ranma 1/2 (of which I'd previously seen the first 4 or so episodes at least half a dozen times but hadn't gone further). I've seen a scattering of later episodes, but it's nice to see such things as Ryoga's arrival on the scene and the introduction of Kodachi. Since I can't tolerate unadulterated Ranma (part of the reason I've seen so little of it before. LunarGeography had lent me tapes, but the DVDs work better because we've got a 5 DVD player. I can load up several items and swap around as the mood suits), I'm also working on Sailor Moon and Gundam Wing.
I think that Sailor Moon might end up being a series that I'd be willing to encourage my kid to watch some day. I'm not pleased with the dub, given the amount of mangling, but... The story has enough predictability for a kid to feel safe even when the bad guys are scary, and the heroines have personalities and real lives without going into really complicated issues.
I've been finding Gundam Wing both interesting and frustrating. I've read a bit of GW fanfic and so have a vague idea of the storyline. I've always felt that the story would work better with slightly older characters. It's just a sort of vague sense of dissatisfaction, of my sense of proper storytelling being irritated.
