May. 7th, 2003 12:35 pmThursday, I had lunch with my mother-in-law. She was in town to see her doctor about her mammogram. We'd originally planned that she'd get me to my afternoon PT appointment and back, but the therapist was out sick, so the appointment was canceled. We went to Cookers, and I had a small salad and bowl of soup. I managed to finish the salad, but a pretty good portion of the soup went home with me.
My mother-in-law finally worked up the courage to ask what last name we're giving the baby. She was actually rather concerned about it. I think she still doesn't know what to make of my having kept my maiden name (her other daughter-in-law did the same). I was able to reassure her. I don't care for hyphenated last names, partly because I wonder what happens in another generation or two. There's a limit to how long a person's family name can be and still be functional. I'm also perfectly content with the tradition that a child uses its father's family name. I've thought about it a bit. I think I'm being influenced by the fact that my half-brother has his father's family name rather than my mother's (that created some problems with my mother's insurance company later. They kept insisting that my brother must be her step-son). If she doesn't see it as a feminist issue, I'm under no pressure to do so.
LunarGeography has lent me some manga. I'm almost through the most recent volume of Kodocha, and I'm working on volume 2 of Wish. I'm progressing rather slowly because my attention span isn't what it once was. I'm in the middle of a few other books, too. I'm determined to finish them all eventually. I just keep picking up a different book and reading a few pages before moving on to something else. The fact that carting a book around isn't currently very easy contributes to this since I read whatever's easy to reach at the moment. I'll write an entry about the stuff I've read after I finish enough books to make it seem worthwhile.
I have come to the conclusion that the Chobits anime lacks quite a few of the things I like in the manga. The anime's cute and fluffy and seems to lack the darker and more thoughtful themes that are in the manga. The anime's not bad, just a bit insubstantial. We're more than halfway through the series in anime theater, and the plot arc doesn't seem to be there.

Date: 2003-05-07 01:29 pm (UTC)Wish is WONDERFUL!!! I adore it. It's one of my all time favorites, now, even if I AM mad at TokyoPop for changing the pronouns >.< (in Japan, the angel is male). Let me know how you like the end?

Date: 2003-05-07 02:30 pm (UTC)As to Wish-- I'd wondered about the angel. It didn't look particularly female to me (not necessarily male, either, but...). I'll let you know how I like the end when I get there which may take a while. I'm moving very slowly in just about everything these days.
