Jul. 21st, 2003 03:39 pmI miscalculated slightly last week. There was no harm done, but it annoys me that I forgot about Art Fair. Basically, I called Wednesday to make an appointment to see my doctor, and they offered me one the next day. That was a lot sooner than I'd expected, but... gift horses and all. Five minutes after I hung up the phone, the horrible truth hit me-- UHS is on central campus and far too close to Art Fair for reasonably sane access.
As it turned out, things weren't too terrible. I decided against braving the bus given that most of the routes run differently during Art Fair. I thought I'd be better off if we didn't walk quite that much. I planned to take the bus home, though, because the 1U wasn't listed as rerouted. At that time of day, it's usually pretty empty, so I thought I might be able to get the bus driver to help a bit more than usual.
I fed and changed Delia before I called the cab. She didn't fall asleep on the drive into town. I'd hoped that she would, but she's been stubborn about that lately. Fortunately, she was well behaved while I dealt with some billing problems. I've been going to UHS since 1985, so I know almost everybody there, and most of them wanted a chance to see the baby. Delia didn't start to fuss until we got into the doctor's examining room.
I got the prescriptions I was after, and the doctor poked at my knee a bit. She concluded that it's still bursitis and still not treatable beyond what I'm already doing. We also discussed the twinges of tendonitis I'm getting in my hands from holding Delia without coming to any conclusions about remedy.
Scott sent me a text message right as I after I left the building (just as I was setting up to send him a message). He was on his way home and likely to be able to pick us up. Delia'd fallen asleep, but I thought I'd best keep the stroller moving, so I set off to explore a tiny bit of Art Fair. I made it most of the way around the block before Scott called to tell me he was in the vicinity. He was confused because he'd thought that a) I wasn't taking the stroller or car seat to the appointment (I'd thought about using just the sling if I was taking the bus both ways) and b) Delia and I would be waiting in front of UHS.
He'd gone home to get the car seat and had told me so. I thought he was going to get the car seat base. (The car seat can be installed with or without the base. Since I don't have a good way to carry it and the stroller has no mechanism for holding it, I don't use it when Delia and I travel by cab.)
I didn't see any really memorable art. I'm not really visually inclined, so I suppose that's not too surprising. I saw a few things that I wanted to touch, that being a stronger aesthetic sense for me than sight, but I didn't want to stop moving for fear Delia'd wake. I was very glad I'd brought a water bottle with me. I'm not used to being out in the sun any more, and I suspect I'd have gotten desperately dehydrated otherwise, even in that short a time.
There were drummers and dancers in the open area near Burton Tower, and being bored with art, I thought I'd head that way. I enjoyed the performance, but Delia didn't. The drumbeat was deep enough and sharp enough to wake her (this is the child who's not bothered by ringing phones, the microwave beeping or even our stove timer going off). Then Scott called again, and I couldn't hear him over the noise.
We did manage to hook up back at UHS. I think Scott was a little annoyed because he'd thought we'd be there waiting even though I told him that we'd need to walk so that Delia'd sleep a bit more.
