Saturday, Scott worked 3am to 7am. Originally, he was supposed to work 3am to 3pm, so this was better than we'd feared. He got home about 9am, just as Delia and I were getting up for a diaper change and feeding. What with one thing and another, it was past 10 when we all got back to bed.

At about 11, I was startled awake by a very loud popping bang. It sounded rather like somebody'd set off a large firecracker right outside our window. Immediately after that, our power went out. The noise had also wakened Delia, and she started fussing. Scott would probably have slept a bit longer, in spite of the fact that his CPAP was suddenly not working, but I woke him so that he could call the power company.

We passed a fairly quiet afternoon. Scott tried to sleep without his CPAP, but he never finds that as restful, and Delia is no respecter of other people's needs. I spent a frustrating couple of hours trying to figure out how to get my laptop to format a floppy disk, so that I could start backing up some of my files. I couldn't get it to work, and neither could Scott when he tried. We can erase disks, but the system then can't see them any more. Scott suspects that we're missing some driver or another that we need to make things work properly. He found me three formatted, blank floppies, and I was able to back up about half of what I considered essential (and a lesser percentage of all of what I'd wanted to back up).

We ordered pizza for lunch and gave Delia a bath. She was every bit as annoyed by the whole thing as usual. We half expected the neighbors to show up to ask what we were doing since we had all the windows open to compensate for the lack of air conditioning and fans, but nobody did. Probably because they're all people who have not only children but also grandchildren.

The power still wasn't back on at 5 when we left to go to Matt's birthday cookout. We weren't dreadfully optimistic at that point because the power company automated system was now saying that they had no estimate as to how long it would take to fix the problem. We knew that the storms the night before had caused considerable power outages in other communities, and we suspected that our outage was extremely local (we later figured out that it was about two blocks, from the church down the street to the curve in our road).

When we got to Matt's he was showing off the category animations he'd created for the Smithee Awards show. We only got to see about half of them since we arrived late, but what we did see was pretty neat. Of course, Delia's arrival gave everybody a new focus for a little while since most of them hadn't previously seen her. We passed her around a bit, but she was a bit cranky and wanted bouncing. Most people didn't think they had the upper body strength to manage for very long (or, in some cases, at all).

Scott showed off his second baby movie. I've warned him that he may become boring if he hits our friends with too many of these. The grandparents will clamor for more, but... They've got a particular interest. (I'm not saying that none of our friends are interested in Delia, just that their interest is highly unlikely to be on the same level as Scott's or mine. She's not their baby, after all, so she's not the center of their universes.)

I really enjoyed getting out and seeing some adults who aren't Scott's relatives, people with whom I share some common interests that aren't baby related. Scott and David exchanged stories about the Star Wars campaigns they're each involved in. David talked with anybody who was interested about different game systems he'd like to try. We all agreed that Nobilis sounded interesting, but most of us don't think we can afford to buy it.

Round about 7:30, Scott checked with the power company and found that the power was still out at our place. Neither of us was willing to face a night with the baby and no lights, so we headed home to pack while we still had some daylight. Scott's parents had expressed willingness to take us all in for the night, so we called them to say that we'd be heading up. We got out of the house about 9; Scott had to use a flashlight for a good portion of his packing (I was feeding Delia at that point and didn't really need light).

It was nearly 10 when we got to my in-laws' place. Delia spent the next couple of hours crying. I think we'd subjected her to too much in the way of social stimulation combined with a severe disruption of routine. She knew perfectly well that she ought to be at home getting ready for bed. Getting ready for bed at Grammi and Papa's just didn't cut it.

So Scott and I struggled to get Delia to sleep, preferably without a lot of screaming along the way. I was afraid we'd be keeping my in-laws up, but my mother-in-law later told me that she hadn't heard much of anything after she went to bed-- She heard a little screaming and was able to tune it out because it wasn't her responsibility at the moment. I guess there are benefits to being a grandmother as opposed to being a mother...

The bed was much smaller than we're used to, and the room was crowded since it's the general storage area for stuff with no other home. Still, the mattress was comfortable, much more so than we'd have found at any hotel or motel. I think we both actually did sleep a bit.

This morning, when we got up, Scott called the power company again. Service was restored last night at 11. If we'd stuck it out, we'd have been fine, but there was no way we could have known that.

I'm considering rejoining a writers' group that I was a part of many years ago. I left it largely because I was the only person there who wasn't writing fan fiction. I simply didn't fit well with the group. At this point, I am writing fan fiction, admittedly not in a fandom any of the other writers know. If I do rejoin, I will likely start work again on the Ruroni Kenshin fic that LunarGeography and I had planned out last summer because I think "Rheotaxis" might be a little much for at least one member of the group.

The main reason I'm thinking twice about it is that the most prolific writer in the group, when last I was a part of it, wrote poorly, at least in terms of grammar and spelling. Additionally, the stories that most interested her weren't generally of the style that I enjoy. I have yet to look at her current stuff, so I may find that this has all changed. She's gotten into writing Spike/Buffy fics, and I have trouble seeing that written with a lot of WAFF, but... People have surprised me before.

Totally missed all the excitement, being away this weekend and all. Of course, my answering machine, kindly telling me it was a bright and sunny 4am, was my clue something was up with thepower... :-)
