Aug. 7th, 2003 07:45 pmIt's been a long week. Delia's proved generally to be good around strangers, but Scott and I pay for it later since it seems to tire her out and leave her cranky afterward.
I got a good sample of that on Monday. Completely accidentally, Scott and I had scheduled dental appointments on the same day. If I'd realized... Well, mine was at 1, and his was at 4. Sticking around town to wait for him to give us a ride rather than taking a cab or the bus. But that, of course, meant that Delia and I had three hours to kill.
We took the bus into town. It was as difficult as I'd realistically expected without being nearly as bad as I feared. The driver didn't quite pull up to the curb either picking us up or dropping us off, so I had to get the stroller across a gap. It was harder when getting on because the gap was well over a foot. It's not something I'd want to do often. I also ended up with mulberry pulp on my dress from the stroller tires (there's about a four foot stretch of sidewalk between here and the Plymouth Rd. bus stop that gets covered with mulberries. I love eating the berries, but the trees shouldn't be allowed to overhang sidewalks). I suspect that the stroller would be a real problem on a crowded bus, so I may have to allow extra time in my travel plans so that I can either wait for the next bus or call a cab if the bus is too crowded.
The receptionist at the dentist's office watched Delia while I had my teeth clean. Surprisingly (at least to me), Delia fell asleep and didn't fuss at all. My teeth seem to be fine. The folks at the office told me that I was welcome to come back at any point during the afternoon because they had an empty room where I could feed Delia and rest. I didn't take them up on it, but I thought the offer was generous.
From there, we wandered back toward the campus area (for those who know the town, my dentist's office is in a house just across Hill from East Quad). We made a stop at the Underworld, and I spent more money than I probably should have. I bought a new GURPS supplement, GURPS Shapeshifters, a couple of volumes of used manga (v.1 & 2 of Magic Knight Rayearth), and the second DVD of Saiyuki.
I'd originally thought I might cross central campus to visit Wizzywig and/or Borders, but having spent so much at the Underworld, I decided that I'd spare myself the walk. The stroller moves fairly easily, but... It's still heavy, and I'm still having some trouble when I do a lot of walking. (I probably ought to ask my doctor about that since I'm also getting pain during the night when I lie on my side. I just keep hoping it'll get better without fuss.)
I ended up changing Delia's diaper on a bench near Ulrich's. I'd wondered where I was going to do that since I can't recall seeing diaper changing tables in any of the bathrooms on campus and I can't manage on the floor very well (my knees bitch about it). Then I sat on another bench and nursed her. I was a little nervous about it, but nobody even looked twice.
By the time I finished that, the sky was starting to turn black, and I figured I'd better get us under cover before it poured. I decided to visit Judy at the Grad. The rain actually started before we got there, those big but very widely scattered drops hitting the ground all around us.
Judy was pleased to see us, and she and I managed to keep Delia amused while we talked. Judy's sister and brother-in-law have just bought a house, and Judy will be moving in with them. She's happy about it because it'll be a lot more settled than her years of living alone in apartments.
It was almost 4 when we left the Grad. There was still a little light rain, but a blanket draped over the stroller was enough to keep Delia dry. She fell asleep again but woke almost as soon as we got to the dentist's. I ended up feeding her while Scott got his teeth cleaned.
Delia and I were both pretty tired when we got home. Once there, Scott and I worked on getting Delia settled. I was very glad of his presence because it meant that I didn't have to do everything and could do a little for myself.
Eventually, I got around to checking my e-mail. I rather over-reacted to a message from LunarGeography. I'd been concerned that she wasn't recovering well from her surgery, and she said something in the message that worried me. I left her several messages before I finally got to talk to her, and I even went so far as to get Scott going to go to her place to see how she was. Fortunately, I was over-reacting, and she was fine. She and Badmovie were out visiting friends.
Tuesday wasn't quite as rushed as Monday, but it still felt pretty busy. Delia got me up about 9, and since I needed to be up by about 10 in order to get us ready for playgroup at 11, I didn't try to go back to sleep. Playgroup met at Valerie's, so someone else had to give us a ride. The gathering was fairly pleasant; I enjoy seeing kids who are where Delia will be in just a few more months. I also liked seeing Valerie's house; I hadn't realized that she'd moved since I'd last visited, but she has.
I had a psychotherapy appointment that afternoon, and I stressed a little over the question of whether or not Scott would get back in time to get me there. He's never willing to say that he thinks he can because he's too afraid of making promises he can't keep. Before Delia, I used to take the bus and then stop at Denny's to kill the time until the appointment. I'm reluctant to do that because the bus trip's fairly long and because I'm not really sure there's a good place in Denny's to change Delia's diaper-- Somehow, I don't think they'd like me doing it on one of their tables. If my psychotherapist actually had a waiting room, I suspect I'd be more willing to risk the bus trip, but she works out of her home and has two cats (meaning that even if I want to impose it's unwise due to my allergies).
Starting Tuesday afternoon, Delia's been eating more often than normal and sleeping more than usual. She seems to be okay otherwise, so I'm suspecting a growth spurt in the offing. It's both annoying and kind of nice, annoying because it seems like I'm needing to feed her every five minutes and nice because I'm getting some free time while she sleeps. Of course, she's not sleeping as long now...
Scott and I have finished watching Blue Seed. He particularly enjoyed the Omakes and, like me, couldn't figure out Kaede's motivation. I'm not sure what we'll watch next. I'm tempted to inflict Weiss Kreuz on him simply so that he'll know what I'm going on about, but the series honestly isn't all that good, and I can't pretend that I think he'll really enjoy it. But almost anything else we watch will have to be borrowed.
Scott worked 7am to 7pm today. I find those days harder than his 3am to 3pm days in many ways. I think when he goes in at 3am I perceive less of the extra time (he tells me that he has a similar experience because he doesn't really wake up until he's been at work for about four hours. Somehow, I don't find this reassuring-- It means he's largely asleep while he's driving to work). Today simply felt lonely.
Tomorrow, Scott's taking a sick day to deal with a doctor's appointment and so that we can run some important errands. I need to make a list so that we don't miss anything important. I'm sure we'll remember to get Delia's birth certificate, but we also need to visit the offices of the probate court and go out to Wolverine Tower and...
This means that I won't be attending the session of the other playgroup I've been trying to join. I've yet to manage to attend that one because scheduling conflicts keep coming up for me. It's too bad because it's for kids under 1 and thus has kids closer to Delia's age. They're actually talking about permanently canceling this group and merging with one that meets on Saturdays. If they do that, I'll never go to a session-- There are too many other things going on during the weekends.

Date: 2003-08-07 07:18 pm (UTC)Since next week is a little busy for most of the anime gang we thought we'd drop in for a visit on Thursday and watch a movie with you. We have an obscure Miyazaki movie, and some other goodies.
By the way, can your dvd player handle VCDs or SVCDs? (aka Videodisks and Super Videodisks)?

Date: 2003-08-08 09:00 pm (UTC)As to the DVD player, I don't know. My impression, based on a little poking around online, is that this model's somewhat finicky, so it may depend on the program used and/or on the brand of blank disk used. Then again, it might actually play anything. We have been able to play the DVD that Scott created of Delia pictures... Sorry not to have a definitive answer.
