Aug. 11th, 2003 10:02 pmFriday was actually mostly a good day. Scott had a neurology appointment in the morning. He's wanting to explore a new approach to dealing with his sleep problem (He has "sleep disordered breathing," something requiring the use of a CPAP but not quite as serious as sleep apnea in as much as he doesn't quite stop breathing, just almost). Since we had other business that needed to be taken care of, he called in and took a sick day.
He was a big help when Delia started freaking out when I tried to feed her at 11am. He fixed a bottle which she drank happily (the last time we'd previously given her one was two weeks before, so that's not the problem). I think I'd have had a hard time coping with the whole business on my own. Part of me felt like it was somehow my fault, that I was being a bad mother. I talked to Valerie and the La Leche League e-list about it and got a lot of support, but that took time. Scott was able to take care of Delia and give me some time to decompress.
In the afternoon, we went to get Delia's birth certificate. Once we found the office, it took all of 10 minutes to get the official evidence that she exists and is ours. From there, we walked to the downtown office of our bank to open a savings account for Delia. Scott had to go move the car while we were waiting for the customer service clerk (we'd parked at a 30 minute meter), so I dealt with most of the bank stuff. We started the account with the $50 check that my grandfather sent us back in June. He'd written it only to her, so a bank account was about all we could do with it.
I'm the adult on the account. The bank's policies won't allow more than one adult on the account (though they assured us that Scott will be able to make deposits), and I'm going to have to attach a statement to my will saying that Scott's supposed to take over responsibility for the account if I die. They gave us the impression that that process would be fairly simple if it becomes necessary since the money's legally Delia's and he's her father.
Delia fell asleep in the bank and stayed asleep when we left. We decided to gamble and stop to eat. We found a place that had outdoor tables, and we both got sandwiches. Delia started to wake about the time we were finishing up which was actually a good thing since it removed all temptation to eat dessert.
From there, we headed out to Wolverine Tower because I needed to stop by the Benefits Office. Years ago, when I started paying into TIAA-CREF and got life insurance, I named Scott as my primary beneficiary and my half-sister as the fallback beneficiary in case something happened to Scott. At this point, I want to make sure that money would go to Delia if something happens to both me and Scott.
Once we got home, Delia not only refused to eat but screamed pretty much nonstop for hours. She finally calmed down and let me fee her about 8pm. Nothing either of us could come up with helped at all. I ended up calling my mother while Scott went out again to run more errands. I kept Delia's bouncy seat going with one foot and tried to keep myself distracted.
