Aug. 19th, 2003 06:57 pmThursday didn't turn out anything like what I expected. I don't suppose there's anybody in the blackout area who can say that their day went as planned, though, so I don't feel particularly unique. We were able to take refuge with Scott's parents again since Fenton, apart from 1-2 second blips, didn't lose power at all. (Scott's sister's in-laws also had power, so she was able to have her kids stay with them.) As happened last time, Delia hated the disruption of the way she thinks things ought to be. She slept very little, and, since we didn't know if Scott's employer would have power the next morning or not, Scott wasn't available to help me.
As it turned out, Scott's employer didn't have power Friday morning. We finally heard from them in the late afternoon. They were actually annoyed with Scott for not having been around right when they got power back, at least judging by what I heard of his side of the phone conversation. They'd have made him come in right then except that he was scheduled to come in at 3am, and they had to leave him a certain amount of time between shifts. So he ended up working 12 hours on Saturday.
Saturday was the annual neighborhood "block party." This year was the first time we actually attended. Most years, it's conflicted with our GenCon vacation, and when it hasn't, we've generally forgotten. This year, however, we made a point of going. I'm very glad we did because we found out that a guy I knew as an undergraduate has moved in a couple of blocks away. It's been years since we've seen him because he's missed the last couple of UCons, but he's someone who played in some of the earliest LARPs I ever ran. Hopefully, the proximity will encourage us to see more of each other. His wife, who I'd not previously met, seemed like a nice person, and it'd be good to have some friends within walking distance.
