Sunday turned into a long day. The wrters' group I'm rejoining was supposed to meet at 1. Chris came to pick me and Delia up about 12:30. Fortunately, Chris and I can find a lot to talk about because, of the three other people, Mike was out of town, Ed had the flu (but didn't call or e-mail to let us know, and Carol didn't show up until nearly 4. By that time, Delia and I were both tired and cranky, so I asked Chris to take us home.

I was disappointed by how the "meeting" went. I'd steeled myself to talk about Carol's four Buffy/Spike pieces. They're simply not to my taste, so it's harder for me to do them justice. Technically, Carol's writing has improved incredibly since I was last a part of the group. I used to dread her stuff because of her grammar and spelling. Now... Well, all of the pieces were full of warm and fuzzy feelings, and that just doesn't much interest me. I prefer stuff that causes characters to grow.

Chris had put forward one story, a Deep Space 9 AU. It was something completed and already published in a text zine; she wanted a chance to discuss where the AU might be going with an eye toward outlining a sequel.

I sent in part of the Kenshin AU that LunarGeography and I planned out last summer. I decided against asking the group to look at "Rheotaxis" because Chris wasn't sure how Carol and Mike might react to it. Oddly, Carol says that non-consensual slash doesn't squick her, just non-consensual het stuff. I'll send her the url so she can look at the story and decide if she's comfortable with helping me work on it. My suspicion is that she'll be more comfortable if I stick with the Kenshin fic. Ah, well. I need to work on that, too. I'd just rather focus on finishing "Rheotaxis."

Chris and I talked about fandoms in general and about academic views of fan fiction. She's doing her dissertation on how her favorite pairing, Odo and Kira, redraws the conventions of mass produced romances. She's drawing on a lot of academic theory about slash to make her points. She's also editing a book, a collection of essays about slash. I've glanced at the site where the call for papers is (http://www.reconstruction.ws), and it looks like an interesting place to spend some time.

That evening, LunarGeography came over. I was still out of sorts, so I didn't manage to relax and chat as much as I usually do. Still, she was able to help me out with part 8 of "Rheotaxis." Getting that posted is a relief since it's been sitting there-- almost finished-- for a long time. I've just needed somebody to have time to work with me on it, to tell me which of the changes I'd made worked and which sections still needed more tweaking.
