Aug. 29th, 2003 03:21 pmMonday, I woke with a migraine. Laura was kind enough to watch Delia for a few hours while I slept. It wasn't too onerous since Delia also slept, just in her swing rather than in her usual spot in her carseat. I figure that I was paying for not having gotten my usual extra weekend sleep. With Scott at work, there was no way I could take time off on Saturday, and Sunday, when I might have asked Laura, was a day of family obligation.
The nap didn't quite kill the headache, but things subsided enough for me to function. Laura then did me a very large favor. She watched Delia while I went out. I went to Borders and to the Public Library. I'd originally planned just to go to the Public Library, but I'd knocked a poorly placed glass of water (Laura's) over and gotten some borrowed manga wet. The damage wasn't too great, but I decided to replace the volumes anyway. It's only courtesy, and it's a series I was thinking I'd buy eventually anyway...
I spent a lot more than I intended to. There were several books out that I'd been waiting to get, and I'm always afraid that things like that will vanish from the shelves if I decide to wait for the nebulous "next time" to buy them.
Let's see... I got Crown of Slaves, the new book by David Weber and Eric Flint. It's set in the Honor Harrington universe but uses different characters. I'm letting Scott read that first since I don't know when I'll be able to get around to it. That was a considerable chunk of the expense since it's a hardcover. I really hope it's worthwhile. Both authors usually give good reads, but Apocalypse Troll and The Philosophical Strangler give me pause for thought. I regretted buying the former and was very happy that I hadn't purchased the second.
In terms of manga, I got Mars v.12-13 (the replacements), Demon Diary v.1 (I'm not sure whether or not I'll buy more of this. I'll have to see what I think of v.2), and Card Captor Sakura: Master of the Clow v.6. Manga's going to be very dangerous to my book budget...
For the rest of it--
Garth Nix's Mister Monday. I've really liked everything else of his that I've read, so I have high hopes. The blurb sounds appropriately creepy.
Jude Fisher's Sorcery Rising. I thought it looked interesting when the SFBC offered it, but I didn't want to pay that much for something that might be horrible.
David Brin's The Kiln People. I mostly like his books and so does Scott. Seems a reasonable gamble.
Mark Anthony's Gates of Winter. I've read the first two books in this series and had already bought the next two. I really need to get back to reading them before I entirely forget what happened in those books. I find myself hoping that he's using a pseudonym...
Patricia Bray's Devlin's Honor. This is another sequel. I didn't have high hopes for the first book when I bought it, but I did enjoy it.
Jane Lindskold's Wolf's Head, Wolf's Heart. I'm about halfway through this one. It's reading well so far.
