the_rckOn a more cheerful note, Scott picked up a couple of DVD boxed sets last week. He got Firefly and the first season of Andromeda. We've been watching Firefly ever since and realizing that we missed more episodes than we thought (not counting the unaired episodes). We're mourning the loss of the show all over again.
We haven't opened the Andromeda set yet. Scott picked it up partly because it was fairly cheap and partly because we've been waiting for the season 1 episodes to be collected in a set. We really liked the first two seasons of the show, so we'll get season 2 as well. We won't be likely to buy season 3 and certainly won't buy season 4. Season 3 was a weird mix. There were some excellent episodes and some really horrible ones. I guess we might buy it if we find the set for under about $25...
It's a pity about Andromeda. The show had potential and seemed to be going in an interesting direction. Then it fell apart. Looking back, I think that the point when the series stopped working was when they had the big meeting to create the constitution for the new Commonwealth. It's not that I think they shouldn't have had the convention or that I think they shouldn't have established the new Commonwealth. Both of those were necessary plot developments. But both of them dictated certain changes in focus and methods that never quite materialized in the series. Now we don't even bother watching new episodes.
Looking at the boxed sets made me think about two series I really want to see on DVD. I'd buy either The Invisible Man (the SciFi channel series) or The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne almost immediately. They're both series that Scott and I enjoyed a lot and that we've been willing to rewatch, given the opportunity.

Date: 2004-01-08 12:43 pm (UTC)I also agree bout Jules Verne. I know you've got it all on tape but I am now a snob for DVD clarity, and especially since I know that show was filmed in some sort of high definition technique and featured Dolby stereo, it just cries out for DVD release.

Date: 2004-01-08 12:58 pm (UTC)We don't actually have the whole of SAJV on tape-- We missed at least one episode. Also, at least one of the tapes ended up half ep and half sp. DVDs would be simpler.
