We've had big excitement with Delia recently, big changes. Last Friday, she woke me at about quarter to five (Scott's alarm goes off at five). I got into her room just in time to see her sit up. That was a first, so I called for Scott to come see. I figured that I wasn't robbing him of too much sleep, that the tradeoff would seem worthwhile.
It took her a couple of days to get to the point where she could sit up any time she wanted to. Now it's about the first thing she does when we put her to bed. We've gotten some cute pictures (don't know how well they've come out...) of her peering through the bars of the crib.
I think this weekend we'll be lowering her mattress. We haven't done it yet because even when she's sitting the top of her head doesn't pass the top of the side rail and because I'm going to have trouble picking her up with the new configuration. But... Baby falling out of crib equals Bad Thing.
Then on Saturday, she finally figured out crawling. We're scrambling to babyproof the living room as fast as we can. Fortunately, she's not being too adventurous yet. Mostly, she's staying between her normal play area and the couch. The power cord for my laptop and the wastebasket are the two things she seems fascinated with that I have to take away from her. So far, she's responding to distraction.
Scott's gotten one safety gate up. We gave up on the pressure gate we'd had in the kitchen doorway. I kept knocking against it as I stepped over it (we have two inch molding there, so the gate was higher than we'd expected. Still the shortest gate we could find anywhere...) and shifting it around. If I could make it move that way, it had no hope of standing up to a determined baby. Now we've got one that's bolted to the wall on one side and has a handle on top for opening and closing two pressure patches. It's solid, and it's easy to open. We just had to put holes in the wall and floor to install it.
We need at least one more safety gate. The living room bookshelf has to be bolted to either the wall or the floor because it's too tempting for climbing and too heavy for safety. Our bedroom door has to be fixed so that it actually latches. We have to remember to shut the bathroom door as we leave...
I'm a little unhappy with the door shutting solution for two reasons. First, our bedroom has no air circulation with the door shut, so it gets very cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Second, the bathroom gets smelly rapidly with the door closed, and there's no way for the odor to dissipate. But Scott doesn't like the idea of additional gates, especially since on in the bathroom door would prevent us from ever closing the door (the frame's very narrow). We're also not sure we could find a gate that would fit the bathroom door (only 24 inches wide while gates seem to start at 26 inches wide).

Date: 2004-02-26 11:36 am (UTC)Maybe a small air purifier for the bathroom and a space heater for the bedroom? By summer you may be able to find a different solution to the 'too hot' problem for the bedroom, anyway.

Date: 2004-02-26 01:29 pm (UTC)Perhaps there is a temporary solution to the bathroom problem, like a large piece of wood that would block her entrance?
