Jul. 29th, 2004 04:07 pmI've finally finished the first draft of chapter 13 of "Rheotaxis." Now I just need to corner
lunargeography to get her comments. Then I'll be ready to do the rewrite. Well, I have her comments on about the first two thirds, so I can get started, but... I need to think a little and catch up on some journal entries. Also, revisions tend to go fairly quickly, at least when compared with initial composition, so I'll probably need her comments well before the end of the weekend. And then I'll send the new version to my other betas. If I'm lucky, the final version will be ready in a couple of weeks.
This chapter was harder than I expected. Most of it had to be told from a different point of view than I normally use, one that's less self-critical and honest about what's going on. That added some challenges in terms of staying with his voice while still giving the reader enough information to understand what's really going on.
I'll start the first draft of the next chapter soon. I need to work out some timing issues to determine when exactly certain events are going to happen. The order I had in mind doesn't seem to be coming naturally from current events, so I may scrap it.
I've been doing a lot of writing longhand in a notebook recently. It's more suited to disconnected fragments and to working for 5-10 minutes at a time. Also, typing in the resulting bits and pieces tends to push me to write the connecting passages. I don't like writing longhand, though, because I can't keep it up for very long-- My hands don't tolerate it nearly as well as they do typing. Also, it's much easier to lose track of a notebook than of a laptop-- I can take the notebook just about anywhere, and it's much easier to set it down and forget about it. I dread leaving it somewhere like my in-laws' house because they would look to see whose it was. Hm... Maybe I should write a few pages of innocuous stuff to use as identifying cover.

Date: 2004-07-31 03:18 pm (UTC)I saw her Thursday. She's been tired and a bit stressed-- The bathroom at her office has a centipede infestation, and she's phobic. Not to mention her sister getting married in a really big ceremony last week...

Date: 2004-07-31 01:36 pm (UTC)I tend to write sections that I expect to flow fairly well and then go back to connect them by writing the bits that were stumping me. Somehow, having the other bank defined helps me to write the bridge.
ooh... yipee!
