Delia had an epiphany in the bathtub last night. We've been using a small ball (just a bit bigger than my two fists together) as one of her bath toys, and she's been quite clear that it is 'ball.' She just hadn't generalized out to either her larger ball or her smaller one. I'd been trying to get her to understand that her two duck toys (which look nothing alike. One's a rubber duck, and the other's a terrycloth thing that makes quacking noises when squeezed), but I could tell that it didn't make sense to her. Finally, it occurred to me that I should be using something with more features in common.

So I asked Scott to bring in the larger ball (it's yellow and green and bigger than my head). Scott and I both told her that it was a ball and then reiterated that the smaller ball was also a ball and that together they were 'balls.' I could almost see the ideas click in her head. She waved her arms and kicked (splashing everything) and crowed. She called both of them 'ball' and tried out the word 'balls.' Then I managed to get her to understand that both ducks were 'duck' (or rather 'guck.' The 'd' seems to be hard for her still, at least as a starting consonant).

Sometime during the last month, Delia decided that my hair makes the perfect security blanket. It's both kind of sweet and fairly inconvenient. My mother claims that all babies (at least those with parents who have long hair) go through a period like this but give it up when they realize that it limits their mobility too much. At any rate, if I'm holding Delia or nursing her, she gets upset if she can't get her hands on my hair. Often, I can calm her when she's on the changing table simply by dangling my hair over her and letting her grad. I suppose I should count myself lucky that my hair's long enough to let me change her diaper under those circumstances. And I do get some very nice cuddling out of it. She does grab at other people's hair, too, including her own, but she seems to prefer mine.

My mother will be arriving at about 5pm today (assuming her plane gets in on time. She's flying in to Toledo and will rent a car and drive up). I'm both looking forward to the visit and dreading it. She and I don't understand each other really well most of the time. I'm hoping this visit will follow the same pattern as her other recent stays-- She'll play with Delia, work on home improvements/repairs, help me deal with things that have been pending for a while (for example, getting rid of the bags and boxes of stuff we've put aside as no longer wanted/needed), and visit some of her local friends.

Hm... Maybe I could invite her brothers and their families to drop by. It's kind of short notice for them to make this weekend, though, and it's a considerable drive for them. Still, I'd like to see them-- I've been half considering taking Aunt Monika up on her offer to give me a second opinion on Delia's weight problems just for the chance to visit with her.

Fortunately, Leah is on vacation this week. She came over yesterday and helped me with cleaning the basement (and doing pre-cleaning lady tidying. I still feel weird doing that, but it makes sense. She can't do the things I want her to do, the things I *can't* do, if she has to wash dishes or pick up scattered debris). I was especially grateful because I'm still having a lot of trouble from the cold I had last week. I've got just enough of it left to keep my asthma active in spite regular use of my inhaler. I need to talk to Delia's doctor to find out if there's a cough suppressant that's safe to use while I'm breastfeeding (and to make sure the inhaler's safe. I seem to recall that it is, and Delia's showing no ill effects, but...).

I want my lungs back.

Go, Toddler D! Master those plurals! :-D

Watch out--shortly after the hair fixation period comes the earring and jewelery fixation period, and she'll grab those things. My Mom says she stopped wearing dangly earrings for about two years when I and my sister were little. ^-^;;
