Dec. 3rd, 2004 05:57 pmThis morning I took Delia down to the Hands On Museum. She's too small for her snow suit, so I couldn't let her walk at all while we were outside. I also had to chose between letting her have her sippy cup and keeping her hands covered (I used the mittens on the way there and didn't on the way back). I always seem to overestimate how long it will take to get us both bundled up and out to the bus stop. Thinking about it, the timing's about what I'd do when traveling on my own; it's just that when I'm toting the child along even a few minutes standing at the bus stop become miserable.
When I arrive really early, I've taken to walking to the next stop back along the route because it decreases the time that Delia will spend complaining. The problem with that, from my point of view, is that two stops back is one of those stops where the bus sits and sits, waiting to get back on schedule (or something. That's the only theory I've ever come up with that makes sense). That means that we can see that stupid thing for several long minutes before it gets to us. We watch it sitting there as we freeze, but it's too far away to make a run for it.
At any rate, this was my first solo expedition to the Hands On Museum with Delia. She thought it was great fun-- Stairs in the playhouse, a pad in the back of the fire truck to dance and bounce on, green rubber balls that just fit her hand and really bounced when she dropped them, lots of puzzles (though she can't yet put anything back in place herself). She didn't really interact much with the other children, which is normal for her age. She acknowledged they were there by not running them over or snatching toys from them (something I watch for now that she's large enough to be able to do it).
Delia was very unhappy when I limited our stay to about 40 minutes. I considered staying longer, but I knew that by the time we got home and I got her fed it was going to be nearly 2pm. Staying would add at least another half an hour, and a toddler who's wearing herself out doesn't get better tempered as the process continues. Once I got her bundled up and strapped into her stroller, she mostly didn't complain too much, except when we stopped for more than a few seconds at a time.
