Thanksgiving was pretty laid back. Scott's sister's family had to travel for her husband's family gathering (a cousin with a month old baby meant that they got together on the other side of the state, quite a reasonable decision). That meant that Scott, Delia and I were the only guests at Scott's parents' place which in turn meant that Delia had no competition for the attention of four adoring adults. She was able to show off her letter identifying skills because we brought her blocks, and she wowed her grandparents by saying, "Dinosaur!" over and over again.

I was able to relax a lot more than usual because I knew that she wasn't going to get flattened by her five year old cousin (who doesn't look where he's going), wasn't going to destroy any toys carelessly left out by the two older kids (who get very upset when Delia does what toddlers do with, for example, card games), wasn't going to wander through any doors that weren't supposed to be open, or... When the whole family gathers, the burden for dealing with all of that stuff falls to me for the most part. I can't say that it shouldn't, really (though I sometimes get grumpy with Scott over it when I need a bathroom break and can't get his attention), because Delia's my responsibility, and the niece and nephew are simply not old enough to understand. I also didn't have to police the food choices very hard because, with such a small group, my mother-in-law made sure that pretty much everything, except one traditional family dish, was fully Delia safe.

The day after Thanksgiving was a work day for Scott. We had to rush once he got home because our niece's birthday party started at 5. Delia had started getting a cold on Wednesday, and she'd been sleeping erratically, so Scott and I were both pretty tired. Of course, Delia took a very long nap that day, so that we rushed out the door in order to arrive nearly two hours late. We'd packed food for Delia, but my sister-in-law had promised that there'd be food I could eat. Sadly... I ended up with leftover turkey and celery sticks because she forgot to check what I could and couldn't eat. She remembered the no soy, no dairy part but forgot that I can't have peppers. I'm thinking of making a list and posting it somewhere online for future reference.

I was also a little annoyed because my sister-in-law didn't tell us in advance to bring a dessert that Delia could eat. We had, as a precaution, but it was a last minute thing. She said, "Oh, I assumed that you were used to doing that by now so that I didn't have to say anything." Delia didn't seem to register that the other kids were having cake and ice cream while she had chicken and cooked carrots, so we didn't even use the cookies we'd brought (she doesn't much like the one cake we've found that we can buy by the slice, and I'm not about to make a sheet cake that no one else will touch again). I was just as happy not to bring them out because I was afraid the other kids would demand a share, and the dratted things are expensive.

Delia acquired a balloon at the party, a pink one. Surprisingly, it still hasn't popped. It's shrunk to about a third the size it was to start, and the helium's long gone, but it's still intact otherwise. I think I'll disappear it soon. Delia's mostly lost interest now. The first couple of days, she was thrilled with it and bounced it all over the place, but the novelty's gone.

We gave our niece Sandra Boynton's Philadelphia Chickens CD with the accompanying song book. She wasn't all that impressed by it when it was next to the Barbie laptop and the princess dress and the sleeping bag and all the other stuff she got, but hopefully she'll enjoy the music in the long term. I told my sister-in-law that we've really liked the music; it's one of the few CDs Delia's got that I can stand hearing over and over again (and Delia loves it, too!).
