Scott has discovered that he can read one of Delia's books, Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb, to "The Imperial March" from Star Wars. It's kind of scary how well it works.
Delia woke up about 2am this morning and spent the next two hours refusing to go back to sleep. I almost managed to get her to sleep once, but I made the mistake of looking in on her. She wasn't quite asleep yet and just bounced up and started screaming. I let her for a little until Scott woke up, too. He was worried and wanted to try giving her ibuprofen or something for gas. I was against it because I was pretty sure that the problem was the coughing she'd been doing. From the sound of it, she's got a little bit of a cold, not enough to slow her down during the day or even give her a runny nose, just enough to make her cough when she lies on her back. At any rate, I got her back to sleep about 4am.
Naturally, she got up at her usual time. I was hoping, really, really hoping, that she'd sleep in a bit. I dragged through the day but managed to keep up with Delia. I'm trying to insist that I won't read any given book more than twice in a row without breaks. We need either a reading of another book in between or a few minutes of some activity other than reading. Since Delia's list of books she likes is now fairly long, it shouldn't be that hard to vary the titles, but... It makes her a bit cranky sometimes.
The top titles today are Goodnight Moon, Guess How Much I Love You, Ten Little Ladybugs and Hey, Wake Up! There are other titles that turn up on other days. She loves her alphabet book and can identify all the letters accurately. Barnyard Dance, Birthday Monsters and Snuggle Puppy also tend to come up frequently. Yesterday, she got stuck on The Monster At the End of this Book (I'm reluctant to let her run around with that one because I haven't seen it anywhere recently. I don't know if I could replace it if she trashes it). She screamed when I insisted that we had to look at other books, too.
I think she's experimenting right now, trying to figure out what she can change by screaming. My job is to stand firm, even on the things that don't matter hugely, once she starts trying to bully me. Maybe it doesn't really matter if I read a particular book three times in a row as opposed to twice, except... If I do it to stop her from screaming about it, I'm teaching her a dreadful lesson.

She's already identifying letters? That excellent. I spend a good apart of the year teaching the Pre-K kids their ABCs.

I think the thing with The Imperial March requires an occasional repetition that's not in the book. ::laughs:: I think I need to tape it the next time he does it.
