Friday night, we played the second session of my new Amber game. It's still not feeling quite right but not in a bad way. It's the feeling of players and GM who are getting comfortable with the characters and setting and not yet certain how everything will settle out. As GM, I'm trying to decide which of my plot ideas is best as the next bit of story. The plotline we're currently working through does connect to bigger things, but I don't want that to be obvious immediately. (And I won't give more details than that because a couple of my players read this journal.)

I think that part of the not quite rightness of this session can also be put down to the fact that I was utterly exhausted. I actually tried taking a nap Friday afternoon, while Delia was napping, only to be interrupted by phone calls.

[livejournal.com profile] sorcycat made dinner for all of us, [livejournal.com profile] lunargeography brought salad, and I made a banana bread derived cake for Scott's birthday, so there was plenty of food for us all. The preparation took up a lot of time, however, so I suspect we won't be doing anything quite that elaborate again. Which is kind of a pity because the food was excellent.

Saturday, Scott and I had planned a day of lazing around and napping with a bit of bill paying and a start on measuring the kitchen. But we'd forgotten what week it was. Scott runs a biweekly GURPS Traveller game on Saturdays. He'd been too sick to run the last time, and we'd both lost track of weeks, so our first notice was when Paul knocked on the door. It turned out to be too late to stop the other players from coming, but Scott was still too out of it to GM, so we all simply hung out together and talked. It was not an unpleasant way to spend the afternoon. Just unexpected.

In the evening, we watched the various SciFi channel shows we'd taped on Friday (gaming being incompatible with watching SG-1). I went to bed a little bit early rather than staying up with Scott to watch Battlestar Galactica. For some reason, that show just doesn't work for me. It's not that I think it's bad. So far as I can tell, the creators have thought things through pretty well and are executing their ideas competently. I just don't enjoy watching it.

Delia slept through the night and woke Sunday with a fever. Her temperature was 101.3 under her arm, so we called the pediatrician. The nurse Scott talked to told us to watch for rash and respiratory problems but otherwise to stick with fluids, rest and ibuprofen.

We'd been planning to go to Scott's sister's house for our nephew's sixth birthday party (and, incidentally, a bit of family celebration for Scott's birthday). I hadn't been looking forward to it because I knew it would involve a lot of rushing around to keep the rampaging hordes of older kids from running Delia over and because I knew that our nephew and his younger sister had been sick for the last several weeks with one thing after another, none of which I really want any of us to catch. (Things have been so hard for those two kids recently. Flu, ear infections, pneumonia... Their mother's been run off her feet and now has come down with the flu herself). After we took Delia's temperature, we decided that it would be better to stay home, so I called and made our apologies. That's when we found out about Scott's sister being sick, too.

This leaves me with a rather massive amount of bean salad that neither Scott nor Delia will eat. I'll be freezing some of it, but Scott's balking at buying the containers I'd prefer to use for it. (I like using very small containers, just big enough to hold one serving, because that way I can thaw just enough to eat when I want it without having to worry about keeping track of leftovers. Also, the small containers thaw in about an hour, so I don't have to plan very far ahead.) Anybody local who wants some and is willing to come by to pick it up is welcome to a share.

Scott did the grocery shopping while Delia was napping. Normally, he'd take her with him, and they'd spend two or three hours out and about. He always tells her they're going 'on an adventure!' She seems to look forward to these outings.

Delia's new Sesame Street DVDs arrived on Friday (and so did Scott's birthday present). She seems to love them. Of course, she's a bit undiscriminating about Sesame Street stuff. She has, however, decided to complain loudly whenever the TV is being given over to something other than what she wants. She'll yell, "TV!" and, "Ses Steet!" So far, we're holding firm, but it's not easy.

Delia still had a fever when she woke this morning, but it wasn't as bad, so I decided to hold off on trying to get to the doctor. She's still breathing fine, and there's been no sign of rash. I gave her more ibuprofen just before her nap because her temperature seemed to have gone up. She napped for about three hours and is now up and running around (still a bit feverish).

She's just figured out how to take off her overalls. I was hoping that wouldn't happen until it was a bit warmer, especially given that she can't yet put them back on. Fortunately, her onesie is still defeating her best efforts to strip it off, and she's not even trying to get her shoes and socks off.

Today, Delia really sang along with me for the first time. We've been playing around a bit with her filling in words when I pause and a bit with her giving the first bit of a song and seeing if Scott and/or I will sing it for her, but today was different. All her life, I've been singing her name to various tunes (It's amazing what 'Delia' and 'Cordelia' will scan to). I can do "You Are My Sunshine" with just her name. Mostly, though, I sing her name to the tune of "Frere Jacque."

1. most bean dishes freeze just fine in ziploc bags, with no rigid container at all. don't stack anything on top of them in the freezer until they freeze really solid. (I learned this the hard way.)

2. overalls are a lot harder for a toddler to take off if you put them on her backwards, with the fasteners over her shoulder blades. (baby overalls aren't terribly fitted.) she probably won't notice that you're deliberately frustrating her, she'll just think she's wearing an outfit that doesn't have interesting fasteners.
