I picked up a lot of used books for Delia by going to the library book sale a couple of times. The Friends of Library run a sale every weekend during the university school year (more or less). Hardcover children's books cost fifty cents each. So far, she's mostly interested in the Sesame Street books (I grabbed all of those that I could find). She can recite large pieces (well, large for a two year old) of such fun things as Puppy Love, The Day Snuffy Got the Sniffles and The Sesame Street Sun.

Scott and I are having an on-going... discussion about whether or not to get more books for Delia. He feels that we shouldn't because we've filled up all the space available for her. I believe we shouldn't let that stop us. We have stuff in the living room that doesn't really have to be there. Well, we do use some of the GURPS books, but...

I've suggested putting some books in her bedroom, but we're not sure where we'd put the shelves. Her room's a bit of a mess at the moment because we had to remove the foam pads that were on the floor next to her crib (Delia got them dirty one of the times she stripped off her diaper while in bed). The wheels on Delia's crib can't be locked, so we relied on the pads to keep her from being able to move her crib. It took her a couple of days to figure out that she could shift things.

In fact, she didn't figure it out until another toddler visited and showed her. That little girl wanted to get at the plastic storage bin under the crib. Once they got the crib moved, the other girl showed Delia how to open the bin and get at the toys stored inside. Now, Delia moves her crib and pulls out those toys almost every day.

Additionally, Delia figured out that there was a closet behind the curtain right next to the arm of the loveseat in her room. At first, she was happy just dropping things in there and bullying me into pulling out the stuffed animals we were keeping in there (she doesn't much like stuffed animals, so we figured it wouldn't much matter if we put them somewhere hard to get to). But then she started trying to climb over the arm of the loveseat and into the closet, so we've moved the loveseat to allow her free access. (We didn't put the loveseat there to block the closet and keep her out but rather because that was the easiest place to put it.)

Scott rearranged her room a bit and revealed some nasty mildew behind the dresser. I'm hoping for a chance to get in there with some bleach. (The mildew comes from the weeks during the winter when we ran our humidifier on too high a setting). The cleaning just has to happen on a day when I can open the windows and when there's someone else around to keep Delia occupied.

We had to rearrange the top of her dresser, too, because she can now reach it when she's in her crib. She got her box of baby wipes and emptied it, strewing them across her bedding. She got the basket holding the nail clippers and the hydrocortisone cream and such and then threw each item across the room. I decided that the best solution was to move the changing pad from the center of the dresser to the end near the crib (there's no real damage she can to it or with it because it's just a light foam pad with a terry cloth cover). That, unfortunately, required cutting it loose-- The friends who set up our nursery when Delia arrived early had used the pads straps to nail it in place. I'd not previously noticed.

We've had one further incident of grabbing that proved unfortunate. When Delia goes to bed at night, we read her Sandra Boynton's Pajama Time. We usually left the book on the end of the dresser nearest the crib, where it would be easy to find next time. Delia pulled it into her crib and started peeling the cover. It's a board book, so there are a lot of layers to each page. She got half of the front cover, half of the back and about 90% of the title page. We're now doing our best to remember to put the book where she can't reach it.
