Oct. 11th, 2005 04:02 pmDelia has recently figured out crayons. We'd started her with markers, the kind that only write on paper treated with particular chemicals (she encountered the other type at the first toddler time we went to at the science center. She was so pleased when she realized she could decorate herself with them...), so she kept trying to use crayons by just brushing them against the paper. Now that she knows pressure's required, she's scribbling away, lots and lots of little loops all over the paper. And when she gets her hands on my notebook, she puts a scribble on every page she can get to. It's not necessarily a large mark, but it's always dead center on the page.
She took a bit more than a week to discover that crayons would work on any paper. That was longer than I expected, actually, but was probably because she'd learned that the markers only worked on the special paper (and now she keeps trying the markers on other things, just in case). And I have now learned that crayon can be wiped off of board books with a dry paper towel.
Delia keeps insisting that Scott and I draw her pictures of specific things or write out the alphabet for her. My artistic skills are seriously lacking, I'm afraid. I can't draw a camarasaurus that looks different from my version of a barosaurus, so I've been diverting Delia to other things when I can (though she doesn't seem to mind my lack of talent). I've also been trying to teach her to draw lines as opposed to looping scribbles. I'm not sure it isn't too soon for that, but I can tell that she wants to be able to draw specific things.
She's been experimenting with typing on my laptop a bit. Basically, I'll open a blank Word document and take the font size up to 26 or 28 point and hit the caps lock. Then I let her type. She's starting to learn where the various letters are on the keyboard and how to avoid repeating letters (though she still tends to get multiples of the letters she hits). Delia adores doing this for short periods and will ask to "Type letters!" but she gets bored after not too long, and she hates the delay while I get Word up and running. As is typical for a two year old, patience is not an easy thing for her.
Occasionally, Delia will ask me for things that I simply can't do. The other day, for example, she demanded that I play the violin for her. Well, not only do I have no idea how to play a violin but we also don't own one. Sadly, she did not want to accept that answer. Ah, well. Not much I can do about that.
I introduced Delia to Play-do a couple of weeks ago. She still mostly likes just holding it and watching me mold it, but her aunt showed her how to mush it on the table and mark it with a spoon or a knife, so I think we'll be doing more actual playing with the stuff soon. I got her a stack of ten tiny cans in various colors. We've gone through five (three are dead and have been discarded) and are currently playing with a light blue and a light green. Delia seems to believe that the different colors have different properties so that playing with the green is very different from playing with the blue.

And I'm sorry, but the violin thing is making me giggle madly. Where the HECK did she come up with THAT?

Date: 2005-10-13 06:08 pm (UTC)We finished Love Hina a couple of weeks ago, so we're definitely ready to return it. I'd just been delaying in hopes of finishing the afghan, but that's not going to happen for a couple more weeks yet.
Tonight and tomorrow are bad because I'm not feeling well (I shouldn't be contagious. I'm just not up to dealing with anything more than I have to).
