Hooray and hallelujah! Delia successful used her potty seat tonight. That leaves us almost two weeks until the deadline I set for her (her birthday) to get day time control down. I expect to keep using night time diapers for quite a while yet.
Tomorrow, among other errands, we'll take her shopping for more underwear. She's currently got three pairs. We didn't buy more because we wanted to hold them out as something to come after, when she was ready.
Delia seemed rather surprised by the whole thing. Scott and I made a fuss, told her how proud we are, called various grandparents so that they could tell her how wonderful it is that she's finally achieved this and generally did our best to make it seem like something to be repeated. The fuss will be less next time and gradually decrease to nothing.
Of course, this means I'll no longer be able to assume that her cries of 'I have to go to the bathroom!' are stalling tactics... (She frequently does it when we're out and either preparing to go home or waiting for something else to happen.)

Date: 2007-05-06 01:22 am (UTC)With Schmoo we reinforced potty training by mapping out scheduled times to go to the potty. When he woke up, before meals, before going in the car, after coming home from being out, before and after nap, you get the idea.
The theory behind this being that if potty time is worked into the routine - even if he didn't go - and then Schmoo wouldn't come to associate potty time as interupting play time or 'idenpendent' time and thus he didn't fight it as much and everything fell into place with him.

Date: 2007-05-07 03:22 pm (UTC)I'm trying to do the scheduling now, but Delia's decided that she prefers diapers for now. She knows that they'll go away on her birthday and accepts that, but she wants them for right now. I think it's a control/power thing. Right now, I'm just encouraging use of the potty rather than demanding it, and we're running about 50-50.
As my mother says, at least we know she can do it if she wants to.
