Yesterday, we got lucky, and Scott didn't have to work. His work was only running one line, and somebody else volunteered to work it. We went up to his parents' place in the early afternoon. The original plan had been for everybody but me to go out on their boat and to swim, but it was too hot. At one point, their outdoor thermometer said it was 107. The indoor part of the thermometer has an icon of a man, and he takes off more clothes as it gets hotter. We joked that he was going to be naked soon, but that never happened.

I took my laptop up there because I expected to have a few hours to myself. That didn't happen, but I managed a little writing anyway. I'm not sure I'm starting the story in the right place, but I have a few paragraphs. I need to buckle down and write.

Fortunately, as the sun got lower in the sky, the temperature came down. By the time we left for the fireworks, it was merely 87. We watched the fireworks from the grass along the edge of the local Target's parking lot. There was an ice cream truck going up and down the rows of the lot. Scott said it was selling water and other beverages.

I'm largely indifferent to fireworks. They're a better reason for sitting around outside than is a softball game but only just. These fireworks were, well, fireworks. They did a few shaped fireworks-- I definitely saw a couple of heart shaped ones, and I think there were some that I missed. People were firing off fireworks in other places than the official show, so I occasionally got distracted. (Michigan just changed its laws about what sort of fireworks ordinary people can buy. Clearly the change was for the more permissive. I've never seen amateur stuff quite like this before. I wasn't sure it was safe. Heck, it probably isn't.)
