This is a good news/bad news day.
The good news is that I now have a lovely New Year's Resolution fic written by serenissima. It's "And I Only Am Escaped Alone To Tell Thee" in The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. It gives each of the four main characters a section that reveals their post-canon fates. Reading it has brightened my day.
The bad news is that Delia still has a fever. The doctor we saw yesterday told me to bring her back if that was the case, so we have an appointment in an hour. My mother-in-law is on her way down to get us. I also had the grand joy of fighting Delia to get a urine specimen (she refused utterly yesterday, so the doctor wanted me to do it at whatever opportunity I could get. It's not a clean specimen, but it's the best we could do for a cranky four year old). Delia had a tantrum over that, saying that she didn't want to do it. She also had a tantrum over taking Tylenol this morning (and last night). I think she's starting to associate medicine with feeling dreadful rather than with feeling marginally less dreadful. Given that the worst times for the fever tend to be the half hour before the new dose and the hour after it, that's not an unreasonable conclusion to draw when one doesn't understand what's going on.
We're still, from what I understand, within the expected illness window for hand, foot and mouth (the diagnosis we have based on the blisters in the back of Delia's throat). She started showing symptoms on Tuesday, and four days is the usual length. Of course, tomorrow being Saturday, it's better to get us back in today rather than wait and maybe have to send us to the ER.
Our power came back yesterday around 11:30. That was a bit after I'd committed us to keeping the hotel room for another night. I only know the timing because
cherydactyl was there, putting ice in our refrigerator (this proved a good thing for us to have done the day before. None of the food seems to have gotten warm. Nothing in the freezer seems to have melted). I decided to stay at the hotel with Delia rather than trying to get home just then. That was good because it forced Delia to rest and bad because I was bored silly (especially when Delia was watching a movie on my laptop. During that, I read an issue of Reader's Digest that
cherydactyl picked up for me.
evalerie brought me some food in the middle of the afternoon. That was a lifesaver and got me through until Scott came to take us home.
We managed to get out of half of the cost of the second night which is something of relief. I'll be pulling money out of Delia's account to cover it (that's the sort of thing that money's for, really. Social Security pays it to us so that we can better pay for her care. I want to save as much of it as we can, but this was necessary).
Right now, Delia's curled around me and sleeping. I don't know how long it will last, but she needs it.
