Aug. 11th, 2009 07:11 amIt's early enough yet to be dark out. I'm up due to a migraine. I took Amerge when Scott's alarm went off, but that wasn't enough, so I'm up for the day as the next step after Amerge involves Sudafed and Mucinex and a full glass of water. Given that Cordelia won't be up for a while yet, I'm going to write about our trip.
I took Cordelia to the pool twice during our stay at the Holiday Inn West. Scott took her (at least) three times. There were also two trips with all three of us. From Cordelia's point of view, the pool was the point of the trip. She has a Disney princess life vest that she wore in the water, and by the end of the trip she was actually swimming a bit while wearing it. At the beginning of the trip, she shrieked a lot about the water being too deep and her parents not being sufficiently trustworthy (though neither of us let her slip even once).
We spent some time at my brother's house. Cordelia gradually lost (most of) her fear of his two ferrets. I think that watching her two and a half year old cousin play with them helped, but she was most comfortable as long as they didn't touch her. I discovered that, yes, I am allergic to ferrets. It's mild but definitely there. I'd put it at about the same level as my allergy to rabbits.
The wedding on Saturday was nice and laid back. I could tell that my cousin and her soon-to-be husband were happy, and that always makes a wedding better. It was still difficult to deal with seeing people who my memories insist are small children getting married, flirting, etc. I've seen Katie a few times in the last decade, but most of my memories of her and her sister are twenty years old.
The bridesmaids' outfits looked very RenFair to me and made me wonder if somebody involved is active in that sort of activity. I didn't ask as there really wasn't an opportunity.
Katie's younger sister has an amazing singing voice. When she did the song during the wedding, part of me insisted that there must be a recording somewhere of a professional singing it. I should have complimented her on her performance. I think I was just too caught up in trying to connect the very tall and poised young woman with the pudgy baby with cradle cap. I remember her taking a nap in my arms when she was tiny. Now she's considerably taller than I am.
My shoes disintegrated under me during the reception. I should have bought new ones. The shoes I wore were the same pair I wore when I married Scott sixteen years ago. They fit, and they looked okay, so I saw no reason to buy new ones (and deal with the massive aggravation of the process). Unfortunately, trying them on didn't reveal how fragile they were. Sixteen year old plastic soles apparently can't handle being walked on. Oh, well.
The dress worked fairly well with my grandmother's shawl. I didn't fall out or even end up shifting too badly. The biggest problem was Cordelia clinging to me throughout the ceremony. I had to contort a bit to cuddle her without having the dress get too revealing.
Cordelia and her cousin spent most of the reception running around. Given the state of my shoes, I didn't chase them. My sister, my brother and my step-father did most of the child watching, and the kids spent a fair amount of time outside. I got to see pieces of that because the building had large windows.
My cousin, Katie, does work in science publicity/education, creating things to explain and popularize science that most people would otherwise never hear of. She's made a video about CERN's Large Hadron Collider. My brother made sure all of us watched it before the wedding.
We didn't stay late at the wedding. I didn't manage to say goodbye to everyone I wanted to (I rather figured that the bride and groom wouldn't notice us being gone. They were having a lot of fun, and I'm not sure Katie would recognize me in a crowd, and I know she wouldn't recognize Scott).
The next day, we drove home. My sister and her little boy followed us a few hours later (she's timing all driving for this trip to coincide with his nap). They spent Sunday night with us, and Cordelia and her cousin had a grand time playing together. I think Cordelia really liked being the (much) older cousin, and the little boy thought Cordelia toys, especially her Playmobil ambulance, were the best thing ever.
Monday, my sister left about 12:30 to go up to Grandma's. My parents showed up at 3:00, and my brother arrived at 4:00. We got carry out Korean and went to visit C. (who was one of Mom's closest friends when I was in high school). Some members of the group went swimming at the pool at C.'s apartment complex. I chose not to as I wasn't feeling great, but I got to see Cordelia paddle her way across the pool and back again. She's still not up to swimming without the flotation device, but this is a big, big first step.
This morning, the plan is to go to the Hands-On Museum after breakfast. I'm not entirely enthusiastic and wouldn't be even without the migraine getting me up early. Still, Cordelia is ecstatic, and that's worth something. I think I'll probably buy a family membership. After today, we'd only need a couple of visits over the course of the next year to have it pay for itself. I'll decide later.
And now it's getting light out. I'm going to let Cordelia sleep until about 8:30, assuming she doesn't wake on her own. She has been sleeping late and staying up (very!) late all week. That's going to make next week, with camp starting at 8:30 every morning, a big shock.
