I'm at 3,522 words on the first draft of my Shamethon fic. I've no idea how much longer it's going to be or when it's going to end. It will *not* be an epic or even a small, stand alone installment of an epic. I think I'm getting what my recipient wants, but I'm not getting it as easily or as quickly as I'd expected to. The first of September is coming fast. I hope I manage to get this as polished as I want it to be.
I am looking for beta readers for this thing. Due to the nature of the Shamethon, I don't know who I'm writing for, and I'm not supposed to let other participants know what I'm writing (or to talk about it too publicly so as not to give away which story I wrote). Still, in asking for betas, I feel I have to reveal something about the fic. I'm going to cut tag it and use spoiler coding (which I hope I get right).
So if you're in participating in the Shamethon, please don't click below.

My Shamethon fic is for Ranma ½. The request was for Ukyou/Mousse romance, taken seriously, with fluff acceptable. I realized rapidly that I couldn't match Rumiko Takahashi's style or pacing, so I haven't even tried. I'm hoping that the characters as I'm writing them will seem like reasonable extrapolations from canon, but getting them together has required disrupting some canonical obsessions (plus, I had to get them to the point where they didn't irritate me in order to be able to write them sympathetically).
I'm setting the story somewhere in the manga continuity, after volume 20 but before volume 27 (which I haven't been able to get my hands on because my library doesn't have it). I'm not pinning it down too firmly because the only volume in that run that I own is volume 22, and I don't expect that to change in the next two weeks. I'm also considering this to be an AU because I'm assuming that the character's canonical motivations are simply their public faces and that there are complicated reasons behind them. I'm also trying to make Amazon culture make sense.
My knowledge of Ranma ½ canon is broad but not deep. I haven't seen all of the anime (but have seen the first season more than once) and have read v.1-26, 28-29 once each.
The tone of this story is different from most of my other fics. I think it's gentler and more domestic. I'd rate it as G or PG right now, and I don't expect any explicit sex or violence. I'm even avoiding profanity because it doesn't seem to fit the characters.
Oh-- One more thing-- I'm *not* attempting any sort of accent for Ukyou. She's usually rendered in English with a Southern accent in an effort to approximate the dialect of Japanese she speaks, but I'm not addressing that.
If you want to comment on this fic beyond just offering to beta, please use spoiler coding: [span style="color: #333333;background-color: #333333"]Spoilers here.[/span], substituting angle brackets for the square brackets.
I'm going to be looking for a rapid turnaround and may also ask for betas on partial drafts because I'm getting close to the deadline.
I'm also a little concerned because the Shamethon community is showing up as deleted on my userinfo page. If it's not back in a day or two, I'll have to e-mail the organizer to ask what's going on. Maybe it's moved elsewhere, and I've just failed to pay attention.

Date: 2007-08-17 06:40 pm (UTC)My suspicion is that the organizer has moved it because the majority of the requests were for Gundam Wing fics and some of those requests were for explicit fics that didn't age up the characters. She might also have taken it down temporarily in order to back it up or some such.
Also, when I clicked on the struckthrough name, the message I got seemed to indicate that it was a self-deletion that could be restored if the owner wanted to. The moderator is still around, so I'll ask her. I just may wait until Monday.
