Jul. 25th, 2012 05:16 pmScott's back at work. Second shift is down to two workers, so people from first shift are staying after every day. There are two or three slots to fill every day. Scott worked late last night and will work late tonight and Friday. This is in the desperate hope of being allowed to leave on time on Thursday so that he can take me and Delia to the softball game. We won't know until about three tomorrow whether or not it's worked. The odds for getting the weekend off are vanishingly low due to him just coming back from vacation.
Scott and Delia had a yard sale on Saturday. They didn't advertise it much, so I was surprised we got any customers. Delia sold about $30 worth of stuff, and Scott sold our extra set of king sized flannel sheets (they were, IMO, ugly, that shade of light blue that's almost gray). Scott took the old TVs and the ancient monitor to Best Buy for recycling. The rest of the stuff will be going to Purple Heart when they do pick up in our neighborhood next week.
I think Sunday was the last softball practice. There's a game this Thursday and a make up game next Thursday, but the coach won't have reserved the field for a practice this coming Sunday. That may not stop him from holding one. He's that sort of person. It may, however, mean that we show up at the park to find someone else using the diamond.
Delia has enjoyed softball, but I don't think she likes the coach much. He's not good at encouraging the girls (he yells at his daughter a lot when she makes mistakes) and is very open about the fact that he gives the girls who play better more time in the field and their pick of positions in the infield. Delia is always in the outfield because she can't catch or throw very well. I'm used to Rec and Ed teams that cycle the girls through all the positions regardless of the kids' abilities. I prefer that. I mean, none of the kids are particularly good at this age, and the opportunity to play is all that helps. Unfortunately, it's likely to be the same coach next year. I wonder if Delia will want to play again. She got 'sick' at last practice, as soon as she was working with the coach, and had to sit out but recovered the instant practice was over.
Yesterday, Delia had two playdates. I had most of the day to myself. My plan was to write. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any words to come. I tweaked the last sentence or two of what I already had, but otherwise, I managed nothing. Today hasn't been much better.

Date: 2012-07-25 09:37 pm (UTC)I saw Scott's posting on Facebook inviting people to come to the yard sale. Facebook says he has friended 64 people, so I suppose that's a good start right there on publicizing the yard sale.
I'm not sure you'd be comfortable with doing either of these things, but: Would complaining to Rec & Ed help at all with the coach problem? Or writing him a letter to talk about your concerns?

Date: 2012-07-25 10:05 pm (UTC)Most of the people Scott has friended on Facebook aren't in this state, so I'm not convinced the Facebook mention was much help. He did do a post on Craig's List, but he forgot to mention the times.
I don't think complaining to Rec & Ed would help. They don't have much choice about who coaches-- It's all in who volunteers. They generally have more girls than they do spaces on the teams. The only requirement is that each girl gets to play at least half the game. The coach has full latitude in deciding who plays what positions.
I'm not sure that writing to the coach would do any good. He considers it his job to give the team the best chance of winning that he can. I don't think he's capable of coaching in a different way. He's the type of coach who argues with the umpire (and with the other team's coach).
It's just that, next year, it's likely to be him or no coach at all. We almost didn't have a soccer team this year due to a lack of coach (we ended up with a couple of high school juniors who the Northside gym teacher knew).
