Kamichama Karin 1-5 - This manga series is both sweet and a bit incoherent (though some of the incoherence may come from how long it's been since I read v.5). It's aimed at, I think, a very young audience. The series has an absence of adults and has children serving as avatars for various Greek gods (and maybe other things). The situation as of v.5 seemed quite contrived-- as in set up by some mad conspiracy rather than necessarily by an author who hasn't bothered thinking things through. I'm hoping that later volumes will actually deliver that mad conspiracy, but I'm not going to count on it.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne 1-7 - A few points of theology in this series made me stop and twitch, but I still had fun, and there was at least one plot twist that I didn't see coming. Also, the romance was cute, and I have a certain weakness for phantom thieves.

Kare Kano 14-15 - I'm bogged down in the middle of v.16 of this series. I'm not sure when I'm going to finish it. Since I currently own 16-18, I will eventually read them. I'm just put off by the things I've read about the end of the series. Plus this sort of melodrama makes me want to flee.

Kelly, Carla. Beau Crusoe - I liked the lead characters in this romance. I can't remember a lot of the details, though. For those who it might squick-- Be warned that the novel contains some discussion of cannibalism among shipwrecked sailors as the hero is the sole survivor of a shipwreck.

Kindaichi Case Files: The Mummy's Curse - This vastly over the top mystery amused me. I kept wondering if the situation could become more contrived or if the author could fit in more clichés. I'll be reading more of this manga, I think. If this volume is typical, the order in which I get them won't matter.

Kingdom Hearts 1 - I know I read this, but I remember nothing about it.

Kizuna 3-5 - I've got very little to say. I keep getting the character names mixed up. I can't quite be curious about where the plot's going because I'm expecting maximum character angst.

Lagoon Engine Einsatz 1 - This is the only volume my library has of this title. They have v.2-3 of Lagoon Engine, and I suspect that this was purchased to replace the missing v.1. Unfortunately, it's a quite different series. I think I'd need two or three volumes in order to fully understand the setting. I have vague memories of being intrigued and utterly confused. I think there were giant robots involved, but I'm not positive that I'm remembering correctly.

Land of the Blindfolded 1 - Has anybody else read this manga? This volume didn't inspire me to want to read more because it kept hitting my distaste for character embarrassment and soap opera. Pity, too, because psychic powers intrigue me.

Lathen, Emma. Banking on Death - Most mysteries don't work for me. For some reason, though, this series does. John Putnam Thatcher and his various minions and co-workers amuse me. I thought I'd read all of them, so I was very happy to find this one at a used book sale and to read the blurb and know that I hadn't read it. I wasn't disappointed. The books in the series are often rather dated in setting, but I think they age moderately well when looked at as sort of quasi-historicals. (Looking at Amazon, I see a few I might not have read, but I can't tell just based on the titles. I shall have to look into this.)

Law of Ueki 1-3 - I'm hooked on this one. I want to see how the kid who can turn trash into trees manages to beat everybody who's got flashier superpowers.

Leavitt, Martine. Keturah and Lord Death - This is one of the oddest romances I've read. Keturah nearly dies but makes a bargain with Death-- If she can find and marry her true love in a short time, Death will let her live. If she can't, she'll die. The time that she has for her search keeps stretching, and it's pretty clear that Death likes her a lot. As she searches for her true love, the reader gets to meet everyone else in her village. I enjoyed it.

Lee, Rachel. Shadows of Myth - Amnesia, psychic powers, immortals, ancient evil awakening. There's nothing particularly original here, but I had fun reading it anyway. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series. I did find myself thinking that there won't be anybody left after the ancient evil is defeated, though, what with the famine, poisoned land, winter coming on and all.

Legend of Chun Hyang - Another case of knowing that I read it but not remembering details. I think that I wasn't fully satisfied with where it ended. I think I still have it, so I suppose I could check.

Little Snow Fairy Sugar 1 - Fluff. Pure and utter fluff. There's a reason the library shelves it in the kids' section rather than the YA section.

Lorey, Dean. Nightmare Academy - This is another entry in the Harry Potter imitation category. It was a fun read, and I didn't mind too much that it was written to formula. The main character manifests the ability to open portals during his dreams that can let monsters into the mundane world. All small children have it to some degree, but most grow out of it. He doesn't, so he has to go to a special school to learn how to control it. Once he graduates, he'll be working to handle incursions by creatures let loose by dreaming children or by adults like him gone wrong. Of course, things are much more complicated than that, or he wouldn't have any adventures while still a child.

Love Mode 2-3 - I want some plot in addition to the romance. Something.

Mar 1-2 - It took me two attempts to get past the first dozen pages of the first volume. I badly wanted to smack the main character because he wants to get everything without ever working for it. Getting pulled into a fantasy world and given powers made him more bearable. With luck, he'll improve as the story goes along.

Marvel 1602 - I enjoy AUs, and this one was well done. I recognized most of the characters which shows that I know more about the Marvel universe than I thought I did.

McKenzie, Ellen Kindt. Under the Bridge - I expected this to be a fantasy, but it isn't. It's a story about kids dealing with illness in the family and the prolonged absence of their mother.

McKinley, Robin. The Stone Fey - Somehow, I didn't expect this to be quite so short. It wasn't a bad story, but I didn't quite manage to get inside of it

Millennium Snow 1-2 - Sadly, this manga didn't manage to overcome my general irritation with vampires. Any story with vampires and their angst has an extra hurdle to face with me (though I'll usually still try a manga with vampires in the hopes that the author has a new take or at least isn't wallowing in undead angst).

Miyuki-chan in Wonderland - I think that the frenetic qualities of the story come through better in the anime, but I enjoyed seeing all of the scenarios that didn't get animated. The art was just a bit too busy for my taste. Silly crack.

Moore, Ulysses. The Door to Time - This book annoyed me. It's a kids' book and is obviously kicking off a long series, but it drags. It ends with a cliffhanger, but it took a couple hundred pages for the characters to meet each other, find a handful of clues and then find the magic thingy that will lead to all their future adventures. Nothing happened except that I got bored and skimmed a lot.

Mugen Spiral 1 - I'm reserving judgment on this manga. It could be good or could be awful. The two main characters seem interesting enough-- the girl with vast power and the demon who wants to eat her in order to get that power but who she's turned into a cat.

As usual, I welcome discussion of any of these titles.

I read the first few volumes of Land of the Blindfolded. They were nice, but it didn't hold me in the end.

I like Mugen Spiral, but it's only 2 volumes, and doesn't resolve anything.

Out of curiosity(because I'm curious about the series but haven't read it) what is it about Kare Kano that you have a problem with?

Thank you for listing the Leavitt. I loved The Doll Mage and didn't realise there was another out.

I love Land of the Blindfolded! Please read all of it so that I have someone to share my fanfic with! I think the story picks up after the first few volumes, where I can tell that Tsukuba's getting the tone of the characters down. There's not as much character embarrassment as it appears that there will be in the first volume, since the main thrust of the overall plot is Kaede becoming more comfortable with her powers, thanks largely to Arou-kun. *desperately cheerleads*

[livejournal.com profile] aratana_miyuki LOVED Kindaichi; consequently, she and I watched and read a lot of it while we were in Japan. I loved how the mysteries were so incredibly convoluted, with the murderers going to elaborate trouble to hide their crimes; I loved the on-again, off-again nature of Hajime's and Miyuki's romance. The others are pretty darned entertaining, too, if you want further murder and crazy.

There are only two volumes of Millennium Snow out, because Bisco's set it aside to work on Ouran. I agree with you about the angst-vampire plot being done to death, but I was rather charmed by the story overall. My unfinished fanfic is a crossover between Land of the Blindfolded and MS.

And, yes, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland is fantastic crack. I am most amused at miyuki's journey through "X World" and wish it had gone on a lot longer.

You have great taste in reading material! *nods decisively*

No worries--the cast is fairly small, and the drama to the point. :)
